S is 15 and has got a summer intern from a state university in VA. Does anyone know if he needs a minor work permit? BTW, we live in a different state. If work permit is required, where should he apply? VA or our residential state?

When my sons needed working papers they had to get them at school. Luckily the office was open during the summer to get it.
Contact your HS and get one now. If he doesn’t need it then it won’t matter. Better or to have it then not.

Thanks for the suggestion. Because the university is not in our home state, I am not sure which state I need to apply the permit.

Is you son being paid, or does he have to pay, or is it completely volunteer?

Is it part of a “formal” internship/research program, or just something he worked on directly with the specific professor?

Employment office (if paid), or summer program office (if he is volunteering), at school where he has internship should be able to give you info.

If he is paying to participate…he doesn’t need working papers or permit.

My kids work during the summer in a different state than our primary residence. In our case the working papers come from the state in which they work to ensure that the employers are following the laws of that state. They work in NJ and we went the local HS and got copies of the working papers. We had to have a current physical (in our case ok to come from home MD) and employer had to complete a section detailing hours, rate etc to ensure compliance with the law. There was a section for the school to fill out indicating that they were in good standing, but as the job was purely summer and no interference with school attendance, that was indicated as not applicable.

You should be able to find out by checking websites of the state where the job is on how that state handles working papers. If the schools are involved in that state a call to the school should also answer a lot of questions.

:) This reminds me of when my son had just finished 8th grade and got a summer computer job. He was 14 and needed papers from his old school as he hadn’t started HS yet. The middle school admins had to figure out what this permit stuff was as they hadn’t had to do it in recent memory!

The university my 17 y.o D is working for required a work permit.

My son has finished all paper work including passport check and got university ID, computer account and library access. HR person has not asked for work permit. BTW, we live in MD and the university is in VA that is public. Is it possible that public university job is considered as state government job which does not require minor work permit?
