summer jobs?

exactly how do i go through the process of getting a summer job? i just finished my first year at a school in boston (and now i'm living at home in new york), so now i can work up to 40hrs per week, right? but how do i get the forms i need? do i have to find a job first, and then tell them i still have to get documents? or can i just call my university, and have them fax me things that they can then authorize? im confused with how this works....

and my parents told me whatever job i choose has to relate to my course of study in order for me to work there. is this true? if so, i guess i can't find work in a restaurant nearby and get extra money from tips right? :(

someone help me understand this.....

It is illegal to work offcampus without a proper document even for summer. It takes around 2-3 months to get a work permit even if you apply right now. There is something called CPT, curriculum practical trainning, which allow you to work outside but have to be related to your academic area which mean you have to register for credits.
So my suggestion is you should work in your own school this summer as you might not be able to get a work permit before the summer start. The college jobs pay pretty much the same as flipping buggars without document. Plus you might get a free housing. So think about it
