Minoring in Music?

I would love to minor in music in college but I dont know if I have enough experience to handle it. I would love to hear some imput on what it takes to be a music minor. I am not going to a school where the music program is super competitive.
Here is a little of my background. I would love to hear your input on whether or not you think I could handle it.
I am a self taught guitarist (with a little help from my dad) and have been playing for 6 years now. I can read tabs and chords and can pick up songs by ear or by seeing them being played. I was in chorus when I was in middle school and could read sheet music but it has been so long so I don't really remember much. I know a few songs on piano but I am not that great at it.
Thanks for your input! :)

It sounds like you already know where you’ll be going to college, so I would contact the music department there. Some minors in music are more academic than others, and don’t involve performance.

A few past threads. The requirements, options, and focus are really school specific so it is always best to check with the schools under consideration as suggested.

Most of the detailed requirements appear in the undergrad handbook, and not the overview music department webpages.

Thanks for your input!

Does the school that you will be attending have an official music minor? If not, that need not stop you unless you had your had your heart set on having the music minor appear on your degree. If they do not have a set curriculum for a music minor, you could always find out what your options are in terms of a guitar teacher, then think about finding an ensemble to play with. Some guitar teachers at colleges specialize in classical guitar technique, so ask questions if you are looking for something else. Many will be happy to work with you in jazz or popular styles, but some will not. Look for a course or two in music theory and maybe take a semester of group keyboard lessons. Try to find a music history course that covers the type of music that most interests you. You can essentially put together your own minor if you have to.

Thanks for your help everyone! I emailed the schools music department today.
BassDad~ Thanks for your input. I will definitely consider this if I don’t meet all their prerequisites. It isn’t as important to me to have an actual Music minor appear on my degree as it is to just learn more and continue doing what I love.
