Hi i'm a senior in high school considering wake as my number one school and i had a few questions/concerns about wake. Im japanese and african american and i was wondering if being a minority is really that big of an issue there? im friendly and outgoing and i don't take any offense to racial slurs b/c i joke around with myself when it comes to that situation. Also is it easy to make friends as an asian kid? i think im easy to be friends with but with kids who are slightly racist that could be a problem...

any other comments about being a minority at wake would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

Hi - just want to mention that there have been previous threads discussing this topic - so do look back at threads from the past year. That being said, my son is Jewish and one year ago, that was a big reservation for me. So, I do understand the concern minority students have regarding Wake. There is no one true answer. My son has enjoyed his first year very much. He has not found being a religious minority at Wake to be an issue. I have heard, however, of other minority students who feel differently. I would really suggest you visit this month and seek out other minority students to talk to. I believe Wake is really seeking in increase diversity on campus and that the majority of students will be friendly and welcoming. But there are bigots at any school - you will never be able to escape that entirely and unfortunately, sometimes the bad actions of a few tarnish the reputation of an entire school. But again, I recommend Wake 100% and my son has only had positive things to say about the overall experience.

I agree 100% with rockvillemom. It really is different for everyone. There will be racists at every school, especially in traditionally less tolerant states, but Wake isn’t in the “deep South” and a lot of people at Wake are from the North. This gives the school a more diverse feeling, even though it is predominantly white.

From my perspective, race is not a huge issue here. I have lots of friends of all different races, and everyone on my floor, and for the most part, in my building, is very accepting of diversity (in race, religion, whatever). I personally have not really encountered racism, but I’m white so I understand completely that this may not be true for everyone.

What I can tell you objectively is that I know plenty of minority-students who are in sororities and fraternities who have rarely encountered racism of any sort, while I know others who have complained about it (although not so much). I would definitely visit the school beforehand. Do not jump into something you are uncomfortable with, but in my opinion, Wake is a mostly tolerant institution I hope you find it to be this way, as well.
