Minority admissions rate in the Ivy League.

Some schools (Harvard released figures in the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education (?)) give information on the number of minority students enrolled and sometimes vaguely mentions the number that applied. Has anyone ever done any weird math calculations to figure out the admissions rate at the top universities for minorities?

It was interesting to find that legacies have a 41% admissions rate at Harvard and it would be even more interesting to find the minority admissions rate to put things into perspective.

Minority, as in URM? (Cause yanno, Asians are minorities, believe it or not.)

also (and I'm not trying to be offensive) alot of athletic recruits are minorities, and the athletic part definitely holds more weight than the minority part

quote alot of athletic recruits are minorities, and the athletic part definitely holds more weight than the minority

Wrong you are as the overwhelming number of athletic recruits at ivy league schools are white including basketball, football and baseball.

The ivies offer no athletic scholarships

Athletic recuits at the ivies/ elite Lacs cover a wide variety of sports including crew, lax, water polo, hockey, skiiing, soccer, swimming, squash

If the school has a common data set you can look up the number of minorities in any given class. You will see that blacks make up about 7% of the admitted class, hispanics about 6%, native americans, about 2% and asians about 18% of the admitted class.

^But how many URMs applied for admission?

Subscribe to JBHE and you can find out, because that infos in a back issue from 2003. It was interesting, JBHE said Williams College accepts 51% of black and Middlebury accepts 76% of blacks, but still can't get African Americans to equate to 5% of an entering class, poor Midd :( Guess the black cmmunity is not too interested in Vermont...

yea i think those statistics were just for liberal arts schools though, not ivies

the article in question

In the autumn 2005 issue of the JHBE,
There is a listing of

Enrollments by Race at Nationally Ranked Universities

this same edition has also has an article

The Progress of Black Student Enrollments at the Nation's Highest-Ranked Colleges and Universities

which list the acceptance rates for African Americans

2003 issue listed National Univeristies, and Spring 2004 listed ED at National Universities, which had many shockers, like John Hopkins accepts 76% of black early decision candidates.

AA is a factor - but as a URM I can tell you that URM applicants to Harvard Yard and the like sometimes are a self-selected group. 61.9 admit rate to stanford sounds good but you still won't stand a chance in hell without proper creds. and achievements. Anyone here have native american admission rates? Curious.

It is not a 61.9 % admit rate, but a 69.1 percent yeild rate which means of the 252 black students that were admitted to stanford,
61.9 % or 156 students decided to enroll

Good to see someone else on this forum uses the quote headers.

sybbie, I'm sorry, I used poor diction, by "alot" I did not mean "the majority" i simply meant that it is rather difficult to really analyze these stats because there will be overlaps of all groups.

I wanted to point out something interesting. Even a very high black acceptance rate does very little to the overall percentages. Take for example MIT, a school that in 2005 had an overall acceptance rate of 14.3% & black acceptance rate of 31.5%. Using the numbers given, the non-black acceptance rate was 13.7%. I think the difference b/w 14.3% & 13.7% is nothing to whine about...and a white student w/ a perfect SAT etc that was rejected would most likely still be rejected even if no black, hispanic, native american students applied.

And MIT is the most extreme example in the list. For the rest of the top schools the results are even more negligible. The legitimacy of affirmative action is up to debate, but as to whether or not it would likely affect any individual's decision...the answer is no.
