I’m currently a senior in high school and want to go into vocal performance in college. eventually I want to teach voice at the university level or start my own studio. I was wondering if there would be an advantage for me to take a minor in something like business due to me wanting to starting my own studio, or if i should just focus on my major.
Voice students usually have a pretty full schedule,so their de facto minor is almost always language and you don’t need a business education to start your own studio.
Schools often have an course on entrepreneurship for musicians. But whether yours does or not, you can listen to musicamusica above, who is knowledgeable on the subject
Thanks compmom. I don’t want to come off as “anti business study.” I myself got an undergrad and masters degree in the arts and I am now CEO of my own little company. Many successful music grads do quite well in business for the simple reason that they were incredibly busy as students and they learned time management skills. And since they frequently work with others in ensembles their people management skills are well set.

It depends how serious you are about being in a traditional vocal performance program. If you are more interested in contemporary music, it is possible to find a contemporary music program which includes business and production courses, though it doesn’t have the vocal training you may want. Or you can go to a conservatory that has a music management minor or major and take some courses? (Don’t quote me on this, but as I recall the Hartt School may have had that). My D is in a specialized HS, majoring in vocal music. We have the same dilemma, though she is a sophomore. I’d love to know what you decide!
