Minus tuition and room and board, how much money does a student spend in a month?

Assuming I get full ride to a school in a metropolitan area (NY or Boston or LA), how much money will I spend as a student just "living life" in those areas? Ex: food, clothes, entertainment, etc.

It will depend a lot on your lifestyle.

If you stay on campus and don’t go around town regularly, probably not much. If you like going about the city regularly on weekends, sky is the limit.

I spend around 80 dollars a month on things unrelated to schoolwork.

Those are three of the most expensive places to live and so expect the cost of transportation, entertainment, food, etc. to be fairly high. However, the actual amount will depend on what you do.

Unless I go shopping I spend $200 a month, or thereabouts, in Boston. (+$200 for groceries each month, but I’m counting that totally as board.)

I don’t know how much I should consider eating out (like, lunch between classes) as board. If weekday meals and beverages are all considered to be board, no matter how much I eat out, then I probably spend more like $100 or less a month.

Minus board? That means you just need money for going out to eat when you don’t want the cafeteria or other school fare, $100 a month is usually a good minimum. But in NYC in you buy the monthly MTA card, double that. If you want to see some shows or go out to some great venture that costs , you can easily triple it with just one such excursion a month. But you can also live very cheaply, sticking to the meal plans, going to freebies and cheapies, buying your necessities at the dollar shops.

Depends on if you go out a lot obviously. Personally I like to hit the town now and again and that significantly increases what you’re gonna spend, especially in a big city. I had an internship in NYC last summer and I probably spent ~$2500 besides rent and some money my parents gave me for food and a metro card. It’s not at all hard to do out in a two month span out at bars and with going out to shows and to eat on the weekends. You just gotta decide what kind of lifestyle you want to live.

Probably around a 100 bucks. I commute from about 8 miles away from campus and I’ll probably spend 50 dollars on Starbucks coffee in a given month.
