At first I was looking into Computer Science (programming etc.) did some research and realized that it would probably not be the best choice for me based on the course descriptions and required classes needed to graduate.

Then, I found out about MIS, which sounds like what I was looking for in the first place. Something that I would actually be capable of doing. But, I've read some not so great things about this major. Can anyone give me any real insight on this major? Will there be any job opportunities for me?

What bad things have you read?

Like plstcat, I am not sure what bad things you have heard. It is one of the few majors still in demand and getting people jobs.

Well don’t let yourself be intimidated by course descriptions. Some courses sound tough but once you get into it, you may be surprised at your abilities. Plus, if you’re worried about handling the material, most classes have built-in (free) tutorials, labs with assistants and extra help (depending on the institution).

Yes, a comp-sci degree will be harder and more time consuming. But at the end you’ll be qualified for more jobs because you can be hired for both (many) MIS job positions and comp-sci job positions.

But that is assuming he is only interested in Information Technology and High-Tech product development. If he is interested in the business side of activities as well, in some cases the MIS major will give entry-level opportunities that the CS major will not. The calibre of the business school also comes into play too I am sure, whereas the calibre of the CS school does not as much.
