Missed FAFSA deadline

Hello, it seems like I missed a deadline for one of the schools where my DD applied EA. The school also uses CSS profile which I filled out. Their website has different dates for ED, EA, and RD for FAFSA so I must have looked in the wrong section. Does it mean no financial aid? Or is it possible to still send the FAFSA after the deadline and follow up with the letter of explanation?

For early action…this would not be an acceptance that you would have to commit to immediately. Not submitting the fafsa by the EA priority filing date means you probably won’t get your financial aid package early.

Contact the college(s) and ask them. In the meantime…submit your FAFSA TODAY…like right now!

My DD wants to apply for a deferral if admitted. Meaning that we will need to re-apply for a fin aid next year. So perhaps I should not even stress about it… Am I wrong?

Well…if it were me, I would line up my ducks without the deferral issue coming into play. She might change her mind.

She will need to apply again for need based aid for the 2018-2019 school year if she defers.

I don’t know how, schools view applicants who do NOT apply for aid, but then defer. You would, have to contact the school and ask. For a need aware school…having a complete financial aid application is important.

The school seems to be need-blind.

I’m still planning to apply ASAP. I guess the real question is - does it really matter if she was denied fin aid because of the missed deadline and then asked for a deferral.

The school might have a preferred deadline for FA, but the only deadline for filing FAFSA for federal aid is before the end of the second semester of the school year.

This year they moved the opening of the FAFSA to October 1. A few schools moved their priority deadlines to the fall, but many did not. CSS has its own deadlines.

Just file them now and see what happens.

I still don’t understand the meaning of “preferred deadline for FA” for a need-blind school. If the deadline is not met, does it mean the student will not get an “early award” or no award at all?

@tula32

The student who missed the early priority EA deadline will likely NOT get their financial, aid award early…like when they get their EA acceptance. In some cases, a student applying later in the cycle will miss out on some need based awards like SEOG and Work study because campuses have limited funds for these and they are awarded on a fort come first served basis.

Since it’s EA…the school will likely process your financial aid application with the RD students…but really, there is NO WAY we cannanswer that question with certainty.

Call the school. Ask them what happens since you filed your FAFSA late.

You filed the fafsa today…right? That’s what you should have done!

Many schools give out financial aid to all those who meet the priority deadline as a group. As long as you make the deadline, you have a chance at the money given to those in the priority pool. This might include SEOG, work study, and the school’s own scholarships. Some schools give out the limited funds in the order they receive the applications. I know people who used to stay up on NYE to get the FAFSA filed ‘first’.

My daughter’s school has a lot of financial aid called ‘alumni’ grants. Those go to those who meet the priority filing deadline and are usually gone by the time a late application is submitted. However, the priority deadline isn’t until Feb 15 for freshmen and later than that for others.

@tula32 “preferred” may mean having a better chance of getting limited aid, such as FSEOG grants and work study.

You have another issue…your DD has applied to schools that need NCP info, yet her dad won’t provide the info.

Closing thread because OP has multiple threads going on and would be better served by having all of her information in one place.
