Missing SMART Grant

I meet all the eligibility requirements for the SMART Grant and just received my eFAN today

Is it normal for the SMART grant to be missing, not listed, in the Grants and Scholarships sections?

Are you a junior and Pell eligible? What is your major? What is your GPA?

As an aside, I think SMART is ending this next year.

Are you a citizen or green card resident?

Yes I am a junior, I am an incoming transfer student

I am Pell eligible, a Pell grant has been awarded on my eFAN

My major is Biochemistry and my UC-transferable GPA is a 3.6 something and overall GPA is 3.5 something

And yes I am a citizen, born and raised in LA

I think I every requirement

Under Grants and Scholarships, my eFAN looks like this:

Cal Grant B Entitlement Fees - $10,300
Cal Grant B Entitlement Access - $1,551
Scholarship Recognition Award - $1,702
Federal Pell Grant - $4,300

I would suggest checking with your financial aid department just to check and make sure you are eligible ( make sure your major is on your school’s list of SMART eligible majors - there is some stuff to do with codes and stuff that can make a difference sometimes) and ifit is an eligible major that you have not slipped between the cracks.

From what I have read on CC some schools do not put the SMART in the FA package until they have checked the student’s eligibility at the beginning of the semester and that they are enrolled in some classes required for their major. So this *might *be the situation in your case.

As mom2 says, this is the last year for the SMART unfortunately.

Thank you!

The new school is going to have to verify your eligibility before awarding your SMART grant. For example, if you are classified as a junior at your new school, you cannot have received a Year 3 SMART grant in the past - if you are a senior at your new school, you cannot have received a Year 4 SMART grant in the past. In addition, the financial aid office will need to make sure your GPA at your prior school was at least 3.0. These things take time - they are manual checks - so it may be after the start of classes before your SMART is awarded.

UCs seem to not award the SMART & ACG until they have verified you qualify. You could simply email your finaid rep with a polite note showing the SMART req and listing your qualifications, making it easy for them to verify :)

Emailed finanacial aid at UC Berkeley 2 weeks ago - still awaiting reply from them about the time of verification, which I believe is after 9/25 according to their website. The number of credits the student is carrying is also an issue. It would be nice to know when the student will be notified of the award and when it pays out.

It may be awhile. As I mentioned before, posting SMART grants is a manual process. At this point in time, financial aid offices have to concentrate on doing what benefits the most students. Given the cutbacks at the UC’s, I am sure they are short-staffed in the finaid office. You will need to be patient on this one, I suspect.
