More than 30 football players at the University of Missouri will not participate in any practices or games until Missouri System president Tim Wolfe resigns or is terminated … Wolfe’s response to a series of racist incidents has been considered inadequate by many students who believe racism has poisoned the campus." …
It’s not like Mizzou was going anywhere this season anyway
I think sports have no place in a modern college setting…maybe missouri should start refocusing on academics and less on athletics. they can start by shedding the football program. followed by all other teams.
??? For the record, what’s going on has absolutely nothing to do with any athletic programs. They’re standing in solidarity with a graduate student, Jonathan Butler, who is on a hunger strike and all of the other protestors who are protesting the way the university (and especially UM system president Tim Wolfe) has been handling a slew of racist incidents that have occurred, as well as other issues (grad student insurance, for example).
athletics have no place in a college setting, this is a great opening to start the conversation about getting athletics out of the academic setting.
“a slew of racist incidents”
alleged should be added to your sentence…what % of these campus incidents turn out to be hoaxes?85-90%?
either way our entire higher education system needs a revamp and a re focus…I look forward to seeing schools come to terms with the need to remove both sports and the greek system. it will be a long process but the revamp will occur and schools will become centers of learning, advancement of medicine, science, etc…sports and greek life are vestiges of a past that colleges need to shed!
None of this has to go with athletics or greek life though.
The national news outlets covering it haven’t done that great of a job; they’ve been focusing on the football strike but that is only one of many events that have occurred recently. I would encourage anyone who wants to learn more about what’s been going on on-campus to look at this timeline Mizzou’s newspaper [has published](http://www.themaneater.com/special-sections/mu-fall-2015/). It details all of the events that have led up to what is currently going on.
And no, not alleged. There have been 4 specific incidents that have happened this semester and none are hoaxes; the people who were targeted all released statements about it detailing exactly what happened, it wasn’t like something was just called into the police but nothing more was done. There are some who don’t agree with the protests right now but no one is questioning the validity of the incidents occurring.
@zobroward you realize college without sports would make everything incredibly boring, right?
FYI, president already resigned this morning.

I do not agree! (IMO of course)
the pursuit of knowledge is what college is about. perhaps a bachelors could be shortened to 3 years.(cut out the electives and increase the intensity perhaps)
I think people should relax in school develop friendships have romantic relations etc… but the sports, crazy hard partying, frats and such I do not see as part of what school should be about.
I may also note I am not calling for banning things…I just wish there would be an evolution in thought about college.
@zobroward I strongly disagree. What would removing the athletics programs of Uof M do for the academics? School spirit is a very important part of the college process and nothing produces more cohesiveness among a student body than athletics.
" School spirit is a very important part of the college process and nothing produces more cohesiveness among a student body than athletics."
for some people perhaps
@zobroward I’d say most college students. Really, even some Ivies have strong athletic programs. Hell, even a school like Stanford has Top tier athletics programs that produce a strong sense of community and school spirit.
adonkeyfly…it is cool and fine…just not how I want to see it!
I am not a puritan or taliban or something… people should also very much enjoy college…I just feel we need an updating of how colleges work and function in america (other ways too)
I am fine being part of a tiny minority of people who think that. it is all good!
