Hi I’m an international student and I want to major in psychology and/or marketing.
I’m a senior in high school now and until now, I’ve mostly been planning to apply to LACs.
I was discussing with my parents on which college I should apply early, and I was thinking of WASHU or Bowdoin but my parents suddenly suggested MIT because we’re very desperate for financial aid so my parents wanted me to go to a “need-blind” school.
MIT is very new to me, and most importantly I suck at math and other science subjects (especially bio and physics) so I’m not sure if I can follow along well, including the general requirements and other studies.
But my parents said that I wouldn’t have to do very well on my general requirements and just have to mostly concentrate on my major studies in order for admissions to a gradutate school. Is this true? And are the science courses in MIT that hard?
BTW, my SAT(superscored; I’m planning on taking it again this August) is currently 1500, and my TOEFL is 113, and my Math Level 2 subject score is 800 and my Chem subject score is 740.
Bowdoin is need aware for international applicants.
I wouldn’t apply to/attend MIT if you are planning to major in psychology and/or marketing, since those are not academic areas they offer. In addition, their general degree requirements are heavy on science and math, compared to most other institutions.
But I don’t think you are bad at math if you got an 800 on the SAT Math 2 test.
Most liberal arts schools will offer psychology, but typically marketing is offered at institutions with a business school.
Amherst is a LAC that is need blind for international students, and offers Psychology as a major. It is also part of a five school consortium. It may be acceptable to your parents.
Need-blind has little to do with financial aid; NYU is need-blind but generally gives poor financial aid. You may want to target meet-full-need schools:
Thank you everyone for your advice. Is it okay if I flunk my general requirements in college? cuz I heard some graduate schools don’t require the total GPA but just the GPAs for my major.
You can’t flunk your general institute requirements - if you truly fail, you must repeat the course until you pass. Otherwise you can’t graduate. And if you fail too many classes, you may be academically dismissed from the institution. You must maintain a minimum GPA to be allowed to continue.
