MIT Chances?

MIT is my top choice and I'm wondering if my experience will serve me well enough.

Numbers:
101 GPA, 2160 SAT (790M, 750W, 620CR), 750 Math II, 730 Physics, 7 AP's (3 Taken, 4 Senior Year)

EC's:
6 Years Varsity Tennis
Math Honor Society
National Honor Society
4 Years Ultimate Frisbee

I've started many businesses since 7th grade, including one that went international and made $15k - I handmade custom wallets.

Went to a Babson entrepreneurship program sophomore summer - developed a startup there (mobile app)

Started a 3D Printing business (prototyping, toy sales, etc.)

Just got back from an entrep. summer program at MIT where I cofounded two startups, one is a social venture, another is an iPhone app - the executive directors invited me to join their team so now I'm part of the summer program's board :)

The social venture is a travel company for families affected by autism (first vacation will happen in December)

The mobile app is for dietary restrictions launching in a little over a month.

I've taught myself (and continue to learn everyday) graphic design and front-end coding, which I'm very passionate about (mobile app design and branding operations for the summer program & travel company)

I can go on but I don't want to make this too long - does this entrepreneurial activity make up for my lack of high SAT scores and EC's? Just like thousands of others, I'm dying to go to MIT.

Thanks!

You’ve got a really REALLY solid shot! Like, I would bet on you getting in. Maybe take the october SAT for that critical reading score, it’s the only thing on your whole application that looks subpar.

Super impressive. Count the business stuff as ECs on your app.

Hope to see you there as freshmen next year :D

Another thing: you seem really set on MIT, but have you heard of Olin school of engineering? I’m applying there as well, it’s a teeny tiny school. They have a really amazing computer engineering program and like half of their graduates go on to start businesses, or continue businesses they started in college. Olin is really project-based, and starting in freshman year your classes involve solving engineering problems and building real solutions. That’s why the students always start businesses: because they’re creating important stuff from day one. They’ve really reworked the engineering curriculum as something hands-on.

The whole entrepreneurial side of your application really makes me think of Olin for you. If you’re into college rankings, it might not be the school for you, their stats are too weird for them to be really ranked at all. They’re a newish school with like 80 kids per grade. Their campus is tiny but everyone is so friendly. When I visited, I walked in on a group of kids making pancakes because they had gotten funding to start “The Breakfast Club”. And they’re all brilliant too. Very high quality students though and very high quality graduates. Just look at the admission stats and the type of people they accept.

Anyways, that’s my plug for Olin: if you’re interested in both coding and entrepreneurship, I would seriously check it out.

Also you automatically get a half tuition scholarship if you get in. It’s tied for my first choice with MIT. And carnegie mellon. And rensselaer. Aaaah why are colleges so amazing!!!

The SAT scores seem sort of weak but you have pretty good EC’s. I’d say you have about an average chance assuming MIT admissions doesn’t filter you out for not having high enough test scores. Don’t worry, though - I’m sure you’ll succeed anywhere you go.

@yayitsme123 Thanks for the response! It’s funny, Babson College borders them so I spent some time on Olin campus over the summer (2012), pretty sweet place but I honestly forgot about it! Will definitely look into that option, not sure what I want to do in college but probably some sort of engineering. CMU is on my list as well because on top of engineering they have a great design program. My bro’s friend is now a junior at MIT and loves it - also I loved being next to so many schools and in the Boston area for a month at the program, very cool and inspiring place.

Yeah students at Olin cross-register a ton at Wellesley and Babson. It’s adorable, I’m totally in love with it. They have limited majors, but you can kind of design your own curriculum. Luckily they have one for materials science, which I want to do. MIT seems great as well. Good luck! You’ll get in somewhere awesome (if it’s not MIT it’s not the end of the world, but there’s a good chance it’ll be MIT), and I can tell you’ll do great things no matter where you go based on what you’ve already achieved.

Your SAT is somewhat low, but not unreasonably much so. Retaking the SAT could help.

I know that you probably hate to hear it, but MIT is a reach, as for almost all applicants. Your shot at acceptance isn’t going to be much better than the admission rate, but it is definitely possible. Good luck!

Olin is an AWESOME school for engineering. Definitely apply to MIT, as you have the stats for it (and simply graduating from MIT will open doors for you), but consider applying to Olin, as well; it’s a wonderful place with great programs…and luxurious dorms (not even joking)!
