MIT chemistry URIECA modules

Hi. I am an international student that has been accepted to MIT, and I’m planning in majoring in Chemistry. Also, I’d like to take the ASE Chem exam so I don’t have to take the Chemistry GIR; but I was wondering that since I am already exempted of that, can I take the Module 1 in my freshman fall? Also, does anyone know how the schedules for the modules work? Are they taught three times each semester? And are the recitations mandatory?

Thanks!

@solcano If you pass the Chemistry ASE you will technically have the prerequisite to take 5.35 module 1. However taking 5.12 is probably a better idea. But I am not a course 5 student.

My best guess is that the modules would occur one right after the other (similar to 6.0001 and 6.0002), but you should check the course catalog and description to verify.

I would assume so.

The catalog doesn’t says anything about how the modules are taught; but, for example, in their accelerated roadmap program, the sophomore spring has modules 4, 5 and 7; even thought they have the overlapping schedules and module 4 and 7 are the firsts of their respective courses (5.36 and 5.37) so I would guess that they have a pretty particular schedule.

@solcano Perhaps. I haven’t taken those courses so I can’t really say anything, but anyone who knows more about those courses might chime in.

If you can’t find any info on the course catalog or the Course 5 roadmap, you can try looking at the Stellar sites for 5.35-5.37. However much of the course info is closed unless you are in the class.

You’re probably better off passing the ASE and taking something like 5.12 freshman fall, then deciding later exactly when to take 5.35-5.37 with your advisor.
