MIT Class of 2015 - Who declined their offer of admission or wait list spot ?

Does anyone know of someone who declined their offer of admission or their spot on the wait list - international students in particular ?

To clarify, MIT expects people to decline. It’s only when the declining goes to an unexpected degree that they pull people off their waitlist. (So, it’s not as though for every person who says they decline here that there will be someone pulled off the waitlist.)

^True. Out of the 4 people I know who were accepted, 3 (including myself) will be attending. But MIT does expect a much lower yield. It’s tricky to say yet how many people will be accepted off the waitlist, if any.

I feel that a more important question is: are they even going to the WL this year and if so how many people are they taking? When do they announce this?

Also, I spoke with my GC about this (seeing as I am on the WL) and she told me that with top tier college WLs the idea of rankings breaks down as the kids are academically speaking very close in quality and so other factors like geographic/ethnic/gender composition of the class are given emphasis.

Luckily the valedictorian of my class who got into MIT declined it for Harvard, and he’s a white male as well.

They will announce as soon as they know – obviously it takes a few days for them to tally the numbers and decide whether they can admit anyone, then a few more days to go back into committee and select students.

I’m not sure that they explicitly consider the race/gender/geographic makeup of the class as they’re making waitlist decisions, but perhaps Chris will get a chance to weigh in. As far as I’m aware, they don’t.

‘They will announce as soon as they know’

I think my logic is decently sound and I never meant to challenge that. (I thought this was implied)

Regarding the other factors, yes perhaps I used incorrect wording. In effect what I meant to say is that those factors may have a slightly exaggerated importance realtive to RD. Oh yeah, and demonstrated interest counts quite a bit.Plus my GC refuses to take things at face value so…
