Date Submitted App: date EA was due, Nov 1, was it?
U.S. State/Territory or Country: CA
School Type: public magnet school
Ethnicity: Asiannn
Gender: F
Income Bracket Range:
Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): athlete recommendation for crew team, I don’t think think this was make it/break it since I didn’t get in EA, but it definitely only helped. Also, the coach was able to talk to the admissions officer and find out what they wanted. This wasn’t super helpful for me because all they wanted to see was my first semester grades, apparently a few(3) too many B’s for them before that…(all in math and science so understandable, not as strong in these subjects)

Wow, this is long. Dinner is calling, so if anybody has questions they can PM me, otherwise feel free to mull over my mediocre stats.

Some advice: while I stressed out before checking, so I really have no right to say this, but everybody please relax, everything will turn out ok, i promise.

Teacher Recommendation #2: Did not read.

Date Submitted App: 31/12/15
U.S. State/Territory or Country: Trinidad
School Type: ?? It follows British protocols.
Ethnicity: Asian/Indian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket Range: Private information.
Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): Can’t think right now.

Reflection

Strengths: Now I don’t really think I ever had any. I guess I had some good looking academics going for me. I did top my region in Physics, Literature etc. and placed in the top ten in areas of Mathematics, Chemistry and Information Technology. What I thought I also had going for me was my band. God, I loved that band and I poured my heart and soul into it. I really thought it would have made me unique. And I also thought my country’s math Olympiad would have meant something.
Weaknesses: I am mediocre.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: See above. I’ve read and re-read my applications and all I see are faults. I think I could have done much better.
What would you have done differently?: Set my standards lower.
Where else did you apply? I applied to Georgia Tech and FIT and got in (woo~). Got rejected from Caltech and waiting on my rejection from Stanford.

**Other Factors: ** Me

General Comments & Advice:
Applying to Mit was just the wrong choice for me. My head was too shrouded by the clouds in the sky to not see how many more people were above me. What I needed to do was to make realistic university choices (Saving my parents precious time and money). Some people are destined to change the world, others can only dream and it pains me to say that I belong to the latter.

World You Come From: Unorthodox Parenting Approach, 9, How my parents have supported what I wanted to do and let me become the person who I want to be rather than the person that they wanted me to be.
Significant Challenge: Being Overweight as a kid, 8, how being overweight and the odd one out affected my schooling at first, and how I have been slowly coming out of my shell during my Junior and mainly Senior year.
Who I’ve Helped: Quirky but super intelligent friend, 10, No one really liked him, but his brilliance really impacted how I work myself, and my attempts to be there as a companion for him impacted him as well.

Other (teacher’s subject, 1-10 rating, details):

Teacher Recommendation #1: CS, 100, we are extremely close, and I have helped him to vastly improve the department. From putting up whiteboards, to running programs after school, to working with him to co-develop the new Advanced Data Structures and Algorithms Course, I have been there since day 1. He also helped push me to reach my full potential in CS. Listed me as the best he has had in 20 years by far. Couldn’t say enough.
Teacher Recommendation #2: Physics, 9, Robotics coach and bro. Knows me really well, and taught me. I was the best physics student that year, and probably in the school right now. I also self studied physics and he helped me when I had questions. He talked about my work ethic, motivation, but also my more fun side, since he has seen that after school through robotics and etc…
Teacher Rebommendation #3: English/Newspaper, 9, Spoke about how much of a mentor I am to the other people in the class, and how great of a writer and speaker I am. Supporting some of what the other 2 said.
Counselor Rec: 7, not really anything new. She kinda rehashed my resume and grades. She had a little insight about the student helpdesk, and what other faculty believe, but that’s about it. Also, she was new at the end of my Junior year.
Additional Info/Rec: Professor from Young Scholar Program, CCIS@Northeastern. I didn’t see it, but I can only assume that he was quite enthused about me, as he seemed that way during and after the program.
Principal (after I was deferred). I didn’t see it, but he really likes me and supports me, so I assume that he wrote a lot of nice things and tried to make my case to the admissions officers.
Interview: Awesome, and it lasted for about 2 hours. I feel like I really connected with my interviewer, and she was able to explain a lot of things about MIT that I hadn’t necessarily known about before. I was also able to talk about some things that weren’t on my application, and show my interest in the school and the environment there.

Reflection

Strengths: Huge huge HUGE investment in CS, demonstrated through my extracurricular, work with my CS teacher, and out of school work experiences.
Weaknesses: No hooks, and no major awards.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Deferred because I wasn’t unique enough for that pool, and later accepted because IDK. I guess the pool was good for me this year. The extra recommendation from my principal also helped I would bet. That, and saying that MIT is my first choice, and that I would attend unconditionally if accepted in my FUN form.
What would you have done differently?: Nothing, since I was accepted
Where else did you apply?
UMass Amherst, Accepted to Honors Early
Northeastern, Accepted to Honors Early,
Caltech, Rejected,
CMU SCS, waiting
Stanford, waiting
UCB, waiting

I am going to attend MIT so those don’t really matter at this point :stuck_out_tongue:

Other Factors: None

General Comments & Advice:
Just be true to yourself. Look at me; I am not some national prodigy, and I haven’t done anything that is out of reach for the average high school student. I have just dedicated myself to my interests since day one, and tried to do my best in everything that I do. Even if I wasn’t accepted, that would have put me in the best position possible to succeed in the future.

I CAN’T BELIEVE THAT I GOT IN!!! MIT 2020 :~)

General Comments & Advice:

I think there’s a lesson to be learned here: if you are low on STEM qualifications, don’t expect much of a chance here. As much as the interviewer told me not to worry about my stats, my essays, recs, volunteer work, and ECs weren’t enough to pull me through. Please, if you’re applying, have these under your belt.

Strengths: IDK… ACT? Doesn’t matter after a certain point. Definitely RSI for MIT. Maybe STS?

Not off the top of my head, although I imagine it was a more intricate process than what I went over above.

General Comments & Advice:
Know your audience. Do not rant about the 500 something hours of community service you did in the Caribbean to a school like MIT. It’s alright to come off as quirky/nerdy without overdoing it. For internationals, prioritize need-blind schools always. Don’t lose hope.

A 6-year-old dream come true. After the waitlists from WUSTL and Caltech, this struck me as a surprise. I’m still ecstatic and I still need time to process this, but I wish the best of luck to all applicants in their college admissions processes!

Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):

Essays:
What You Do For Pleasure: Watch Food Network! (talked about how I love the creativity/excitement), 7-ish (well-written but 100 words doesn’t give much room for a stellar anything)
Department at MIT: Architecture (math+science, my family takes a lot of road trips and I’ve been fascinated by watching the architecture change across the country), 9
Trait Most Proud Of:
World You Come From: 8 (stereotypical suburban town, great schools, motivating academically)
Significant Challenge: 10, This is where I encourage everyone to be honest and take some risks in this whole process. I wrote about how, fortunately, my life has been very easy and although I’ve certainly been stressed a time or two (like studying for AP tests backstage during a show) I’m grateful because I don’t think I’ve really had significant challenges.
Additional Essay/QB Essays:

Teacher Recommendation #1: APCS Teacher, 10, my favorite teacher from high school, really spoke to some of the more personal/abstract things about me (has come to every one of my theater performances aside from teaching me for two years)
Teacher Recommendation #2: Freshman World History, 8? (I didn’t read it but he writes well), a teacher I’ve kept in touch with for four years, always ready for an intellectual debate with me
Counselor Rec: I’m sure it was fine but impersonal, my school is too big to really know my counselor
Interview: Meh, very mediocre, I thought it would sink me
Art Supplement: I have hand drawings I’ve done on my own (never taken an actual art class) and some models from my architecture class at Syracuse that I submitted on slideroom.

Date Submitted App: Like in October? (lol applied RA before the EA deadline, applied SCEA at Tulane instead, which paid off)
U.S. State/Territory or Country: Ohio

Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket Range: 75k
Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): My aunt and uncle went to MIT but I don’t think that really mattered, since their own son didn’t get in last year.

Reflection

Strengths: Honesty, consistency
Weaknesses: Lack of eye-catching, big shot type activities or accolades
Why you think you were accepted: I think my artsy extracurriculars (basically just theater, lol) combined with my STEM curriculum makes me academically prepared for MIT but a little different than their typical applicant (nothing wrong with Science Olympiad, for example, but I’m sure they see that a lot)
What would you have done differently?: This was one of the first interviews I did so I was a little tense and too focused on trying to say the “Right” things, so I guess I would have tried to chill a bit during that whole process.
Where else did you apply?
Tulane, Syracuse, RPI, Virginia Tech, Auburn (accepted)
Wash U (waitlisted)
Rice, Cornell, Princeton (waiting on a decision)

General Comments & Advice:

Be yourself, be honest, and don’t write yourself off if you think you’re a good student but too normal or unexceptional to catch someone’s eye. Don’t sweat it if you don’t get the result you were hoping for. Of course you can be excited if yo get in, but the decision (whether it’s good or bad) is not necessarily an indication of how successful you will be or whether you’ll get in to other great schools
