MIT Class of 2021 Applicants

@IndoAmerican Correct me if I am mistaken, but I think most uni’s don’t look for “evidence” of any major accomplishments. In fact, I’ve been told that attaching too many supplements can hinder your chances rather than boost them.

@NewAgeGilgamesh I’m not quite sure what you mean by “evidence of any major accomplishments” at all. I really only have some JV sports, baking and coding as my two ECs. Are you saying this is “too much”?

The “evidence” can simply be confirmation of ECs in the teacher and GC recommendation letters. If you say in your app that you are passionate about something, and it’s not mentioned by your GC or teachers, it could raise a red flag. Be sure to talk to your GC and teachers about what you are doing outside of your classes.

@indoamerican mit knows that u r frm india where ec opportunities are less
So dont worry too much about that …

Hi, just a scared child passing by. I hope you all do the best later this year and let’s all work hard to achieve the credentials necessary to show MIT that we mean business!

Is this the official thread for 2021 applicants? If so, ayyyy lets go guys!

also, @indoamerican: mallus representing!! cant speak malayalam to save my life though haha

@Insitium Thanks for the support! As my name suggests, I’m not quite Indian, yet not american. I did sophomore year in Cal, so I guess my background makes me an outlier. Maybe thats good, maybe not…

@WOLFHEART555 Nice to hear from another mallu! I really hope to see you ‘Under the Dome’ in the fall of next year. For that matter, I hope to see you all in the fall.

I got a 790 on the Math 1 SAT Subject Test. Do you guys think this score (98th percentile) looks better than an 800 on the Math 2 subject test (which is only like 82nd percentile)?

@gsw1999 check MIT stats for sat ll maths …whats ur intended major

@NewAgeGilgamesh Is this true? I know I’m going to submit a music supplement, but I was thinking I should do something for Programming since I intend to go into EECS/Materials Science

@gsw1999 http://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/no_chance I think MIT does not differentiate between a few points, so both those scores sound qualified enough!

Offer I made from the first page still stands; I haven’t checked CC much since I posted that because I’m currently away from home, but I now have pretty consistent access to the internet if any of you still want to talk or send me drafts. I’m not an admissions expert or anything, but I spent waaay too much time reading about this stuff the past four years. I’d love to help anyone who needs it.

(If you sent me a message during early June and I didn’t respond, just send me another “still active” message and I’ll get back to you!)

@ManaManaWegi
Hi as a class of 2020 guy (I’m finally off to Cambridge, but that’s besides the point), I’d suggest if I may, that all other things equal, you apply to MIT early. The advantage that that conferred to me was that I could also apply to other (Non SC)EA schools by November which left me with more time to focus on my regulars. Most people apply to only one early school while I managed to get four out of the way by November, leaving me to spend more time to spend on fewer schools in the next couple of months

@ManaManaWegi IF those two schools are your only Ivy picks, I’d apply to Princeton. The difference in EA and regular admits is much larger for them than for MIT, so it maximizes your chances at those two schools.

As a parent of MIT class of 2020 student I second applying to Princeton early. MIT EA rate is similar to RD. Princeton SCEA rate is much higher even considering legacies and athletes.

the essays are out!!! http://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/our-2016-17-application-essay-questions

I’m MIT 2020 and can confirm that applying EA affords you no advantage in admission other than getting it done and out of the way early. I don’t know about Princeton though.

@iamnotironman Thanks! I just took a look. I’m so excited. The 4th essay will be my chance to talk about my disadvantaged setting (low income; first in my family to go for Bachelor’s; attending the worst High School in my county not by choice) but I’m not sure how to put in a way that I don’t sound like I’m whiny.

The essay prompts on the link posted are exactly the same as last year, if I remember them right. Good luck to everybody.

I am going to have tough time writing 3rd prompt

Hey–I’m also applying to MIT! I’m debating whether to apply to MIT EA or to Stanford REA right now.
