Good luck! I hope she has a chance to visit and attend classes. All great universities, but environments very different, particularly MIT. My S had done an overnight at MIT as a recruited athlete and attended a few classes. He felt he did not have the preparation or passion for STEM that MIT seemed to require.
BKSquared, your son made a good observation. You definitely will be in a very STEM oriented college at MIT. But for a STEM focused student, it is a very good fit.
I’m from NYC and still haven’t gotten an interview. I submitted at about 11:30 PM on November 1st. Should I be worried?
15K EA applications. I guess last year was not an aberration.
It almost doubled and tripled from years before according to the redit thread.
It doubled last year (unsurprising with test optional) and this year is about the same level as last year. Which is a bit of an unfortunate harbinger for applicants to T20’s hoping that last year’s numbers were a fluke.
When eveyone believes that a lower admissions percentage means schools are “more competitive” so “I better apply to more schools because, you know, the percentages”, it’s a positive feedback loop.
Yup, my son’s Naviance for 2022 actually shows MORE applications this year than last year for many T20’s.
A few of the seniors at our HS are using a local college counseling company and their strategy was to take the SAT/ACT once and if the score doesn’t look incredibly high, their plan was to go test-optional without stressing/diverting time/energy to SAT/ACT.
Have no clue where my son (submitted scores) will be accepted vs what we can afford (chasing merit).
Same here. This year in my D22’s batch more than a dozen applied to MIT and over a 20 applied to stanford REA and many did other T20s EAs and EDs. It’s an increased number just in their batch compared to previous years. But the fact is, despite of getting admits like GT and UMich, most kids we knew chose UCB, UCLA, UCSD and USC and stayed back in Cali.
Fingers crossed for good results.
Totally agree
Any of your kids attending SPLASH this year?
No SPLASH this year;
son did attend 2 years ago in person.
Son thought he was this cool 15 years old college kid attending classes at MIT. They had some really cool/interesting topics/courses.
Mine is attending this year, SPLASH being virtual makes it easy. One of her seniors is teaching a class, she’s thrilled to meet her as well. She’s enjoying today’s classes so far. Few more classes tomorrow.
Passing on virtual Splash after doing in-person in '19 and virtual last year.
My child finally had the interview today.
Scheduled for an hour and was completed within the hour.
As nice folks here had mentioned before, it was very conversational and focused on knowing my child’s ECs and background.
Thank you for your guidance.
Now keeping finger crossed.
Glad to hear it went well. Best wishes.
Thank you.
No, not really.
There’s just over a thousand in overflow. People who submitted early got scheduled early. We’re down to one in my state in overflow, which I will probably pick up tomorrow if that person is still there.
I always said the best way (but still not a sure thing) to get an interview is to submit your application well before the deadline. Pretty much as soon as one’s application is submitted, the applicant’s name is forwarded to the EC assigned to that high school. Some areas don’t have enough ECs to go around and the later applicants are the ones that stand to lose out.
