Mit ea

As shown above, I'd really like to get into MIT EA and I suppose this is just a plea for reassurement (my friends say it boosts confidence), but thanks to everyone who replies in advance! On another note, my activities are pretty revealing of who I am, so it'd be nice if this was kept under the table.

Upper-middle class Asian male in TX

Science bowl (9-12) - just for fun, really

Summer:
Spent 8 weeks at a paid research internship at UCLA for chemical engineering under a program called HSSRP; learned a lot about research, especially in catalysis, designed a scientific poster, gave a presentation; won best poster award
-Competing in Siemens/ISEF this year with project

I am also applying to other top-tier schools, such as Stanford, Princeton, UPenn, Cornell, etc.

Thanks!

EDIT: Oh, my father went to MIT for undergrad, if that means anything

MIT is one of the few schools that does NOT favor legacy status (Google it). But lucky for you the rest of your application is very strong and focused. The UCLA internship will look nice, along with competing in Siemens! You have a good chance, but make sure to apply to some easier schools too!

What are your matches and safeties? MIT EA is fine to have as a reach but it is just that: a reach.

@smarty99: Yeah, my friends have told me that, but thanks!

@Catria: I am auto-admit for UT Austin which I would be happy to go to - other than that, I believe I am a match for Rice, maybe NU

Sorry to tell you, your post was read over 50 times in the first 5 minutes. This cat is out of the bag.

Yeah, I meant it specifically for people that might know me. I didn’t want them blabbing my scores/ECs and whatnot

Well, I think you’ve got a great chance at it… your profile excels in a lot of different areas, which I think they’ll like.
At this point, just make sure you make your essay really bring out your personality and passion; after that, I think you’ve got a better chance than a lot of applicants.

You have a pretty good shot, honestly. Your stats and ECs are phenomenal, so if you write stellar essays and procure glowing recs, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if you got in :)

Thanks! Stuff like that is awesome to hear

It will be too late for Siemens results to put on the application for EA. You have only five slots for ECs and three places for summer activities, so you need to figure what to put in those places. As others have said, I think that you will still need to be sure to that you convey some character in your application because part of me sees this as the “typical” app with higher test scores and a little more research experience or interest. Overall, though, I think that you have a good chance.

Chance back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1546802-chances-mit-ea.html

@DoingThings: Thanks - I’ll make sure to chance you back tomorrow, essay due in the AM hahah. You seem to be very active on CC.

On the topics you brought up:
I just mentioned Siemens because I can include it on the mid-year report if I get deferred.
5 Slots: Robotics, Boy Scouts, Rowing, Houston Youth Symphony, Math/Science Clubs
Summer Activities: HSSRP + College Visits (9-10 weeks, lol)
Hahah yeah, that’s always the struggle. For MIT’s app, I’m trying to focus on certain aspects of my personality (humor, for one)

NWU: Reach
Rice: High match

Upper middle class Asian male!!!

Do you have any national level award?
If not,

MIT: Reach to high reach
Stanford: Reach to high reach
Princeton: Reach to high reach

Penn: Low reach
Cornell: Solid Chances

HS class of 2011

5 Asian males applied to MIT that year.
4 with 2350+ or/and 35+ and 3.95+ multiple 800s on SAT IIs with “good EC and awards”. All got rejected or waitlisted

1 got in with lower numbers and less impressive ECs: Low income single parent family

Do your best then pray!
You will get into some great colleges. Which ones? Nobody knows!

Hahah thanks, Catria & 20more

That’s exactly what I’m hoping for! Shooting for a lot and maybe 1 or 2 acceptances
And also, FIRST Robotics International Championship Winner (Texas Torque)

“Shooting for a lot and maybe 1 or 2 acceptances”

That is right!
You will get many rejection/WL letters. Be prepared!

Applied to selective colleges only (except 1 safety). 6 acceptances 6 WL and 6 rejections.
(2380, 35, 800-800-800-780)

Hey
I think you’ve got a relatively solid chance at MIT EA, and reading some of the things that define their prospective student, I really think it fits you well (aka your sometimes awkward but unique sense of humor…)

Obviously your scores are very solid (kudos to you!) but just make sure your essays really have an underlying theme of why you would fit in there: because you have the characteristics of a student at that school. Y’know schools like MIT are really a crapshoot, and one extra boost to your already beefed-up application would to just be to show that you’re truly someone that would thrive in that type of community. And knowing you, MIT’s almost like a match made in heaven for you haha.

Just some underlying themes you might want to incorporate into your essays…MIT is pretty specific on what they like haha

If you ever need someone to edit for content (I suck at grammar), you know who to talk to haha.

Last but not least, pray ;)

I’m having trouble determining target engineering schools (chemical, specifically), do people have any suggestions?
