Question about entering courses and grades: S24’s high school does not calculate gpa based on A or A-….only gives whole numbers…however on the transcript it may say A-. Since an A- was treated the same as an A for GPA purposes are students expected to make a distinction on the MIT application? Also there is only an opportunity to put one grade for the whole year as opposed to semester grades….there are some classes where he got an A one semester and an A- one semester. Not if this is super important to think about since they will get a transcript as well but want to make sure everything matches up!

“In the “Grade Received” field, list term and/or final grades for each class, as found on your school transcript (semester, trimester, quarter, final, etc.). Use one entry only per class. For example, it’s not necessary to use a separate entry for each semester of the same class. Place all grades for a class in the same field, separating grades with commas.

So, he would enter “A, A-” if that’s what’s on his transcript.

Okay got it thank you….he better start really reading for all the details!

The rewording is mostly to fix some of the complexity in prior prompts I’ve drafted by a merciful colleague.

Reading policies closely turns out to be a helpful skill for navigating college. Can’t start too soon!

S24 is in the polishing stages of his MIT app. Now he needs to finish up the portfolios. How are others doing? I can feel how much more deliberate he is being with this one since it means so much. I am hoping he will still get an interview even though he will be submitting close to the deadline. Anyone else’s kid done yet?

Good morning!
D24 still has a lot to complete. Applying as international, so has some kind of difficulties. Wish good luck to your son and other applicants

The word count limits vary essay to essay, but they also are unclear. How many words will each text box allow? For example, on its admissions website, MIT states, "[d]epending on the question, we’re looking for responses of approximately 100–200 words each.” But I also see possibilities for 225 or 250 words. Can you list the max word counts for the 5 required essays, please?

S24 is submitting for all 4 portfolios…he has significant accomplishments in all four areas but wondering if this is typical or not. Anyone with insight or experience regarding this?

Can anyone help me get a firm grasp of the word count limits for the MIT essays?

There isn’t one

S24 submitted his early app tonight for MIT! Now the waiting begins. He has plenty of other stuff to do while he waits of course.

S24 got an email today about scheduling an in person interview with a local alum. I’m excited and nervous for him. Thinking its better to get it done quickly to avoid over prepping for it. Anyone with tips on the MIT interview in particular?

Dear MIT Chris,
The word count limits vary essay to essay, but they are also unclear. How many words will each text box allow? For example, on its admissions website, MIT states, "depending on the question, we’re looking for responses of approximately 100–200 words each.” But I also see possibilities for 225 or 250 words. Just the usual for any good college interview:

  • be prepared: why MIT, your major, any questions for interviewer
  • be a good listener, eye contact

Many of son’s interviewers have graduated 10-20years before, so they often didn’t have any feedback on current/recent stuff (questions about dorms, recent clubs, etc).

Main thing:

  • don’t sweat the interviews,
I don’t think interview moves the needle on admission; interviewers just want to make sure there’s no serious red flags to report.

S22’s MIT interview was about a 7 level (out of 10).
His Princeton one was 9-10, but he was rejected.

Thanks for that. S24 had his interview a couple of days ago and it was fine. He met a local alum in a nearby coffee shop for an hour and they chatted. I do get the impression the purpose of the interview is really to make sure an individual lines up with their application and perhaps that they are personable. The interviewer mentioned that the acceptance rate for students he has interviewed is slightly above the usual admission rate which was funny but he did not imply that his evaluation had alot of impact on admissions otherwise. Its out of our hands now!

Does your son’s application checklist reflect the receipt of his portfolios?

I just checked with him and no the portfolios are not showing up on his checklist. Should he email admissions about this?

DS’s portfolio is not showing either - so figured I’d ask here to confirm it’s not just him.

I do not recall how it looked when our oldest was applying four years ago, but they redesigned their application portal since then anyway.
