Yes, a "D", without any usual circumstances being responsible for it, can break an application. But an "A" can't make an application also. So, it works just down there.

Sob. That makes me feel totally terrible.. My grades crashed big time in 11th. Like, totally. Though I tried. I tried pretty hard. I went from 85 to 65 in the span of 2 months. Sucky.

blue_box what happened?

and if I end up with B+'s in AP government and english, but I've shown that english was my weak subject, would that hurt my chances? (though, I've shown improvement from B-'s in jr english and told them I'm doing ap humanities despite that the fact I suck at english).

I don't know what happened. The curriculum went from manageable to insane. And the teachers think everyone's going for coaching or tuitions and they race through stuff to finish the syllabus in time.
The chem teacher, for example, scolded me for not knowing how to calculate logarithms, even though no teacher has taught it to my class. Ever. That's just how the Indian system works. Maybe I could describe it some other time.

As for what you said, I think you'll do fine. They require intensive courses in maths and science. To me the fact that you're taking those APs shows determination and initiative.

@blue_box: Grade deflation in Class XI is a known thing in India. I won't say a 65 is no problem at all, but in context I guess they will understand. For the record, Logarithms IS taught in Class X in India. :) How were your boards?

In my board (CBSE) logs used to taught in 9th. About 8 years back. Then they removed it from the syllabus completely.
My 10th boards were fine. 90s in everything except english and french.
Oh yea, I don't mean a 65% aggregate. Just chem. My aggregate is in the mid- to upper-70s. Which is top 15% at my school.

To be taught*

oh yes the logs!!
Had the same problem in grade 11, they started logs out of the blue... Hahah..
as long as they put that 'in top 15%' ...your good, i think. Just follow up on ur recomm. and make sure they don't miss that point. (Follow up in bold)
GL !

@ mollie : Thanks for the help! DVD mail....probably by the end of next week! (hope they enjoy a physics lecture...HOPE)

Follow up on which recommendation?

@R-DNA: Are you sure you haven't jumbled up your and you're in your essays? :P

@blue_box: Follow up as in request the teacher to explain the grade deflation in your school or provide the class average in your transcript which will help MIT to understand your case better.

just out of curiosity, does MIT ever contact your teachers, guidance counselors, or anyone who wrote a reference? I have one mentor who is really intelligent but has terrible english (immigrant), so that might be a problem should they ever need to reach him. gah.

@prime235
they won't unless there's some question they really need answered... which doesn't happen often

@ adrivit : ARRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...... I did :(
Not just in my essays, also in a thank you letter i sent to my interviewer a couple of minutes ago.

This may have been asked already but, what happens to early admits who have less than stellar grades on their mid year report? I just bombed my calculus final last week so my grade is lingering around the C (maybe C+) area and I would still love to go to MIT but I'm worried they will rescind my admission.

My interviewer has not yet submitted his report ... we had the interview back in September. What do I do?

Trnsparnt_Opcity:
In Matt's words: "MIT giveth, and MIT taketh away." Low marks in your finals can get your admission rescinded. However I doubt whether a C+ in Calculus is enough for that to happen. As long as your other subjects are satisfactory you should be fine.

So an 80 wont look too bad in the presence of a bunch of 90s? I'm freaking out!!!

Haha. So in your book 80 is C?

I thought an 80 (it may possibly be a 75) was a C. Either way, I never had lower than a 96 in a math class and I'm worried they will think I am slacking off.

Is there anyway I can send in a URL now as supplemental stuff?

and
