MIT FAQ for application year 2011-2012 (with answers by MITChris)

Hi,

I requested for an interview from my EC, but he hasn’t replied after 1 week. Should I panic? Should I send another email or will that be rude? Thank you very much!

Oops sorry for the double post.

@simp1eton
“Should I panic?” hah, don’t panic :stuck_out_tongue:
[Scheduling Your Interview | MIT Admissions](http://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/scheduling_your_interview)

“If you haven’t heard anything in three or four days it’s fine to contact them again and you should.”

Back in September I called my assigned EC after a week of not receiving a response, and we scheduled the interview that day.

does not checking the ethnicity box on the app hurt you? i’m asian, and i don’t really want to flaunt that (cough). but my friend told me that colleges don’t like it when you obscure your identity.

MitChris, I was wondering what is the minimum score on the math sat 2 subject test that one would attain and should not retake it?

I’m thinking its 770. Thoughts?

^ Admissions has said time and again that if you get somewhere in the 700s, you’re good to go and should stop wasting your weekends taking tests.

Granted, other schools operate differently, but 700+ is enough indication for MIT. The rest of your app gets you in, not wasting your time bumping your 750 to a 770.

It says on the mymit website that we get EA results sometime in mid-December

Does anyone know the exact date results come out?

Chris said in a post today that the “alert” post revealing the release date will be posted sometime NEXT week, so the week after that is probably when the results come out (I think last year the alert post was on the 9th and results on the 16th)

Gah…I want them to hurry up!

yeah me too…if it is 2 weeks from now that means holiday break (at my school at least), so more time to wait around and fret and my birthday potentially spent mopping lol

what blog post was this? It looks to me like Chris’s last post was on November 30th…

I found it on the comments of the harry potter blog

Do you really though? The only reason it takes so long is because we spend so much time with each of the applications. Trust me, we want to take a holiday break as much as you do, but we also have to do due diligence on each of ~6100 applications. We’ll get them out as fast as we can.

What is it that happens “in committee” exactly?

You can read about the process of the selection committee in [this blog entry](Selection begins | MIT Admissions) by Matt.

so each application is “voted” on more than just the 1 time with the subcommittee of 3? Or is it just the applications that were initially disputed that receive a subsequent votes?

from that blog post

up 200% since then!!

@IsaacM -

There are many different rounds of evaluation. Compelling applicants will make it through several rounds of committee, and the committees are composed of much more than 3 (usually 7-8) people nowadays.

When are MIT decision letters for EA set to be mailed out? And, are the packaging for the acceptance and rejection letters the same as prior years? (a tube for accepted, small package for rejected)

This has not been announced (or decided) yet.

This is never announced in advance – if tubes are sent, it is as a happy surprise to accepted students.

(This is actually the one single aspect of the admissions process on which I currently have some insider info. But I will die before revealing it.)

Anyways, on topic, I just registered for my SAT subject tests, in the “Send Scores” area it did not ask me for any code (as given on MIT Admissions site) but I had to select MIT from a list of schools. Is it okay? Or do I need to find some place and enter that code?
