MIT FAQ for application year 2011-2012 (with answers by MITChris)

Heyy guyss … can anyone throw some light about how many students got selected from India for the Class of 2015 ??
… and i also have to ask … that somewhere in the admissions site it is written that applicant will be judged within his/her context (sumthin like that i dun remember the exact line) … does that mean that if someone, from the same country as mine, gets a higher score than me in the standardized tests or if someone has taken SAT over TOEFL , will make me prone to a straight rejection ?? … and if my country provides a big applicant pool w.r.t. to (many/any) other country(s) … will the test scores , at any course during my application being processed in MIT , become a prominent factor for rejection of application ?? … i mean in that case will a 2300 will be preferred over a 2100 …
i know it has been told many times that they purely show an applicant’s preparation for MIT and scores are not that important and all of that , but still will this be true or not ??

I have submitted a supplement document, but not sure if it was received via fax. Is there any way to confirm that it has been received?

Sorry for the double post:

In your MIT Webcast you said that some of the best essays you’ve read are just those which describe the background and world the applicant is from. However, on reading some entries and books from some other top university admissions officers, they say the ones that get them are the abstract, or the different - those who can find the greatest meaning in the smallest thing.

Where do you stand on this? Does it differ from University to University? Or even from a single admissions officer to another?

Well of course it’s slightly different everywhere. But I don’t think those two things you describe are incompatible. Every applicant is so different: if you write about the world you come from they will necessarily be different. When it goes wrong is when applicants go “err, crap, let me think of something different to write.” That is when - paradoxically - most of them end up writing the same thing.

^Chris, so what are common things that applicants will write about in that way? (similarly to everyone else, I assume with the mindset of “this is what MIT is looking for”)

So from reading through this thread I just realized (and am now freaking out) that I didn’t send my AP score report. I sent everything else- SAT IIs and ACT. I’m only really concerned because I got 5 on Calc BC, and without reporting it there’s nothing to back that up. I’m pretty sure decisions are already made, seeing as last year people found out about a week from now. Should I be concerned? Should I just wait and see if I’m deferred and go for RD? Technically it’s not a required thing, I just feel stupid for not thinking about that fact that I would also have to send that separately.

Gahh.

Jordie1915, I don’t think you are suppose to send the AP score report.

JennyChin, then theoretically couldn’t I report 5’s for every test?

sidethought: if only I had known this earlier… JK : )

Ooo… Tubes…

hahaha a comment from 2005- [Countdown To Mail Drop | MIT Admissions](Countdown To Mail Drop | MIT Admissions)

All I want for Christmas is my MIT tube,
My MIT tube, see my MIT tube.
Gee, if I could only have my MIT tube,
Then I could wish you “Merry Christmas.”

You don’t need to send an official AP score report. Self-reporting the scores is fine.

I just went on collegeboard to send my SAT scores for RD and on the side it Dec. 20 was when MIT early notifications. I guess this means we’re getting decisions no later than 20th?

Thanks!!!
No more worries… about the application at least. The decisions are another story : )

Hey MITChris,

If I applied EA and I have an engineering competition on Friday, if my team does well (pray), am I allowed to contact the admissions office regarding it? If so, who should I contact?

Thanks,
feesix

ok i have a question…er… some questions.

1. my school(and in all probability my country) doesnt offer APs or IBs or HPs, but the regular courses for us are as difficult as them, maybe even more. am i at a disadvantage in any way??

2. do i have to send photocopies of all my certificates and awards except for my transcript and resume??

3. community service is a part of our regular school curriculum and we are awarded grades in it(all subjects have marks outta 100). so i cant proudly proclaim that i have 200 hours of community service or 2000 hours of community service or stuff like that. is that a problem? and also the community service includes everything from teaching underprivileged children to planting trees to donating old books for orphanages.

4. i dont have stellar ECs. the only thing i like is astrophysics and my piano. both since i was 7 year old. i love them but i havent got a lot of awards in them. this is not even a question. i know itll give a bad impression about me.

5. now this is my biggest problem. it starts like this. every student here has to take some specific subject tests organized by the national board in his 10th and again in his 12th grade. also we have specific admission tests after 12th for getting into colleges. its like if you get good scores in the entrance tests and board exams you are definitely admitted to the colleges. the school transcripts play no role in the admission process in our country. so the teachers here are like, why do you need good marks in school?. im in my 11th and i performed reasonably well in my board exams in my 10th. but the school exams are really bad. im not saying i performed bad, its just that the teachers are inclined to make the school tests as tough for us as possible. its like, in english test, if a question is out of 5 you can never get more than 3.5 even if you wrote the best answer possible; you ask them and they say, why! 3.5 is the maximum you get out of 5 in school. you get 5/5 in boards only. i know it will sound a bit stupid for you, but this is the case. students in my school barely score an overall percentage of 80. im in the top-tier between 75-85. in my 9th i was in top 10%, in my 10th i was in top 5% and now im top 1%(unofficial rank 1). but even then i have this nagging feeling that the colleges in u.s. will reject me for my bad school marks. so please advice me on the situation.

6. as i said earlier, my school gives marks outta 100 for every subject and we are then given a percentage overall. so what should i do in the CGPA part?

to make matters worse im an asian(indian).

please help me. please. ill be applying next year and yes i need a full scholarship too.

Next Friday will be too late for EA updates, but if you are deferred to RD, you can certainly send the update via mail or fax.

No.

For the rest of the questions, be aware that MIT admissions officers are very familiar with what’s typical for international applicants, and for applicants from specific international education systems. They will not be surprised that your school doesn’t have AP/IB classes, they will understand that you don’t have many opportunities for ECs, and they will know that school grades are not as important to you as board scores.

^ seriously!!!
then i at least have a fair ground to play on…
im relieved a lot.
thank you so much.

hey Mollie … are you serious ?? … i mean i m obviously not underestimating the admission guys and anyone else … but since i m part of the same situation as his ( BTW , hello to you akashdip ) … how do you guys know how strictly school guys treat us ?? or in general case how do you guys know everything about an applicant’s world (where he comes from ) no matter how remote our location is and what kinda school grading we are a part of ??

hello @kamehameha(cool name!!). nice to see at least someone sharing my problem(not that its good though).
ever since i came to know that u.s. schools need our school marks too, im kinda real mad at my teachers. why? why dont they give us more marks? is it that they sell the marks at the local mall to buy grocery? kinda frustrates me that no matter how hard i try i can never achieve more than 85% in my school exams.
sometimes even 85% is an overkill. the marks goes no more than 80%.

Question - There is an award that I just got notification that I earned yesterday, but I will not receive the certificate until the end of January, so is it possible for me to just send admissions an email to have that update added to my EA app? I thought it was too late already, but since Mollie said, “Next Friday will be too late for EA updates,” I guess not. If I don’t send it by then and get deferred I’ll send it for RA anyway…
