MIT Launch Summer Program 2016

Do you guys think there is a realistic chance of getting in through the waitlist? I know one person who hasn’t been denied yet (I’m assuming she’ll get accepted tomorrow) that can’t go to Launch anymore. I’d like to think there are others that got in to “better” programs or something and decline, but that’s just wishful thinking.

Just throwing this out there, I got accepted and am in one of the group chats and no one has even thrown around how much they make or anything like that. At this point, we’ve all talked and shared our accomplishments to get to better know each other but no one has been acting pretentious at all. Congrats to everyone that got accepted and I can’t wait to meet you all this summer!

@QuVntt True fam. No one in Session 2 acts like what he describes.

@MomofMax Also no one in my group (Session 1) are pretentious as he described I’m not really sure what he is talking about.

@Momofmax The acceptance rate was somewhere near 10% I won’t know for certain until maybe next week

@DrScienceScD All the things I talked about are from the session 1 group chat. It’s possible that you missed these messages as there are A LOT of messages in the group chat. You can confirm everything I said by searching for keywords like bmw and apartment(?).
I haven’t seen the session 2 chat, so canvt comment on it.

@thekidnextdoor How did you get into the session 1 group chat?

I have friends who got in…

I wonder how many kids applied? It is an honor either way. Excited for the possible opportunity. It’s amazing so many people know others who applied. Even though we live in Atlanta, there are a handful (because they all win the same awards, recognized in same newspapers) who would even think to apply.

I think the greatest gift would be to allow him the opportunity to spend the summer with like-minded kids who share the same passion. Best of luck to all those who got in, tried or are waiting to hear.

@thekidnextdoor I’m a member of the session 1 group chat. Maybe I missed the pretentious messages you mentioned, and yes I know there are a lot of messages in the group chat so it is possible, but I can tell you that in the 1000+ messages that I HAVE read, everyone was pretty normal. I don’t think it’s fair for you to diss the group as a whole simply because of one example.

It’s not just one example. I read a few hundred messages and most of them were like this. It was never my intention to diss the group, all I was trying to say was that a fair share share of people in the group were like that. A big enough number for me to not think highly of the program.

@MomOfMax I am in Atlanta as well.

Where do you do school? That is very funny

Doesn’t anyone else see the humor here?

First of all, what kind of entrepreneur is ok with their parents paying $7000 (tuition, airfare, food) to attend a 4-week program? Seems to me that someone who is genuinely chomping at the bit to become an entrepreneur would recognize the value of that $7000 and use it to start their own app-based company (several times over) this summer!

Secondly, the MIT Launch thread has received over 36,000 views this year, but the Endevvr program has only 200 views. From what I can tell, they are very similar programs. Does the difference possibly have something to do with kids wanting the word ‘MIT’ on their college application? If so, why don’t these kids realize how transparent this looks to adcoms?

We highly encourage you to spend the time this summer doing something you’re passionate about–if that means you want to spend your summer building your own app-based company, that’s great! In fact, starting their own companies, organizations, and clubs is what a lot of Launch students do prior to coming to Launch. (That was also the case for me personally, I had a little jewelry shop!)

A lot of our students get a taste of entrepreneurship through their own initiative and drive, and then come to Launch because they seek a more structured education in entrepreneurship, a better network, a chance to learn what they couldn’t figure out by themselves, and the opportunity to take their innate self-starter abilities to the next level.

@redseas Wanting MIT on a transcript is perhaps transparent to admissions committees, but that intention is also very apparent to us when students apply to Launch. I want to make it clear again that the goal of MIT Launch is NOT to get students into MIT. Our mission is to teach students the skills they need to be entrepreneurs and to solve real world problems.

We are highly aware of applicants that might just want the MIT brand on their resumes and thus we make sure the students we admit are not so one-dimensional that they only want to fluff up their resumes/college applications. We admit students who demonstrate to us that they have a entrepreneurial mindset and values, are here to learn and grow and thrive as innovators and problem solvers.

do people actually have a chance of being accepted from the waitlist? I’m trying to decide whether I should wait until May 1st to start making plans for the summer! @anniemit

@stxxrdust In my opinion, there are negligible chances of being accepted from waitlist. Last year I heard that they put up a lot of kids on waitlist out of which just 2-3 got in. I may be wrong on the stats part but its just not worth it. Rather you should start making out the plans  Goodluck.

okay, thank you! i just wasn’t sure because i dont think very many people got waitlisted from this thread @hoshjoshe
