<p>It doesn't help, because they don't expect students to major in what they say on the app, or for that matter what they say as arriving freshmen. As has been said, MIT doesn't admit by major.</p>
<p>Now, if you really care about linguistics and can work your desire to do linguistics into the app in a compelling way, it might help a bit...but simply writing "linguistics" on your app counts for zilch.</p>
<p>Be warned that MIT's linguistics dept is very closely tied with CSAIL (which is why Chomsky's office is in CSAIL), so regardless of what you want to do at MIT, be very very comfortable with basic math, science etc.</p>
<p>sorry, i was more of thinking that linguistics isn't the most well know major at MIT.
I was kinda getting annoy at all the people who are asking if putting an uncommon major will give them a better elusive chance.</p>
