MIT linguistics

ok i really want to go to mit thats my number one school so thats the reason im asking such a picky question i want my application perfect.

if i say i want to major in "linguistics" on my MIT application will i stand out? as opposed to all those math/science majors.

When i say linguistics does that make my chances better or worse?

why do you want to major in linguistics?

why do you want to major in blank? people have different interests...

no, writing linguistics isn't going to give you a better chance at all.

they don't admit by what major people say on their app (for the nth time)
there is no easy way to get into MIT except earning it.

and since MIT isn't the best school in linguistics, they might doubt your reason of going there.

If your interest in linguistics is genuine, why should it matter?

....then again your reason could be that you are a Chomsky fan :D and
love his books and outspoken logic and IMHO THAT should be a great reason
to do linguistics @MIT

It doesn't help, because they don't expect students to major in what they say on the app, or for that matter what they say as arriving freshmen. As has been said, MIT doesn't admit by major.

Now, if you really care about linguistics and can work your desire to do linguistics into the app in a compelling way, it might help a bit...but simply writing "linguistics" on your app counts for zilch.

All of the above, but

"why do you want to major in blank? people have different interests..."

you may want to formulate a better response than that to the short answer question on the application.

Isn't this...kind of false? Just saying.

Be warned that MIT's linguistics dept is very closely tied with CSAIL (which is why Chomsky's office is in CSAIL), so regardless of what you want to do at MIT, be very very comfortable with basic math, science etc.

Yeah, I've heard the exact opposite, too: that the MIT linguistics program is one of the best in the world.

sorry, i was more of thinking that linguistics isn't the most well know major at MIT.
I was kinda getting annoy at all the people who are asking if putting an uncommon major will give them a better elusive chance.
