The Institute is considering building a new dormitory, as continued demand exists among both graduate and undergraduate students despite the recent openings of the Warehouse Apartments, Simmons Hall, and Sidney-Pacific Graduate Residence. We can anticipate that we will propose some kind of residence hall within the next couple of years, Curry said.

The fact that many of the present dormitories are in extreme need of renovation could influence the function of a new dormitory, Curry said. One possibility would be to use a new dormitory as a temporary facility to house residents of other dormitories while their buildings undergo renovations, he said.

In addition, MIT might grow the undergraduate population slightly, as the faculty size and degree programs could accommodate more students, Curry said.

Ouch, that hurts to read. While it's good that so much construction has taken place already, it would be nice to have the dorms renovated for the class of 2009 when we get there. But that's being selfish. I can cope.

It sounds as if the dorms are really run-down. For those who have been to MIT and visited its dorms, how are the dorms, in terms of cleanliness, age, looks?

East Campus and Burton Connor will probably be rennovated in the relatively near future. Last fall, there was a Tech article that gave lots of folks a scare, describing a proposal to have EC residents temporarily moved out of the dorm in 2008 and into Ashdown (an grad dorm) so that EC could be rennovated. The 'tute has denied such plans, saying that the article was based on a proposal someone wrote, but that it was never approved.

So, we're not really sure what's going to happen, but if dorms will be rennovated, EC and BC are at the top of the list.
