MIT Second Language Stuff

Hey Guys I have a question: Should I continue my second language to AP or drop it after the minimum requirement of 2 years? I don’t love it and it would give me an opportunity to take more math or science classes. I’m in French 2 right now. How much does it matter?

@IndianGeni Note that they are not strict “requirements.” (see [here](http://mitadmissions.org/apply/prepare/highschool))

If you decided to switch from French to a different subject, what would it be?

Thanks, For next year I plan to take:

Calc BC AP
Chem AP
APUSH
Honors English

And For the Last 2 i’m still debating the following:

Comp Sci 1/2 then AP Comp Sci 1/2
Physics 1 (likely)
French 3 (Planning To Replace w/ Physics)
Organic Chem
Anatomy
GBBE (Likely)
Maybe, Just maybe APStats

Can you please Advise Me??

By The Way GBBE is Genetics, Biology, Bio Technology, and Embryology. The Prerec for APBIO

@IndianGeni I don’t know if I can really answer that question for sure since I feel like it depends on other factors. For example:

*Do you want to become fluent in French?
*Is physics a HS graduation requirement? Is it possible to take AP Physics 1/2 or C?
*Which one do you think you’d enjoy more?
etc.

Maybe someone more familiar with MIT admissions could pitch in. In general, you should strive to take a challenging course load in order to better prepare yourself, whatever that may be.

While @MITer94 is correct in terms of MIT, I’ll assume that you are planning on applying to colleges other than MIT. If all of them only require 2 years, you’re fine. If some of them request 3-4 years, then you should probably continue past French 2.

I don’t really like French all that much. Physics is not a grad requirement although you can take C or Physics 2 AP.
I would probably enjoy physics more. About the 3-4 years thing I think its more important for English or History majors. I may be wrong. I am positive I want to go into engineering or the pure sciences. I don’t know i’m sooooo conflicted. :frowning:

@IndianGeni If you don’t really like French that much, take physics instead.

However you could either take Physics 1, or AP Physics C. I might suggest Physics C, since it is calculus-based and will probably be more useful for you. Plus, MIT gives 8.01 credit for Physics C but not B or 1/2 (http://mit.edu/firstyear/2019/subjects/incomingcredit/ap.html)

Unless you test out Physics 1 has to be Taken before Physics C so I’ll most likely need to do that first.

@IndianGeni – What grade are you in? I understand that 2 years of foreign language is really the minimum these days for a number of top colleges and many expect 3. At our high school, students may not go straight into Physics C - maybe with some prep or placement test you can or your school has a more open policy. But I would urge you to make sure you are ready for it as I believe it is typical to at least have Physics 1 or another course prior to that Good luck.

Hey Thanks for your reply ,I’m a Freshman. It is mandatory to take physics 1 first at my school. I’m trying to plan for next year for course scheduling.

Also I took French 1 in Middle School. I can speak 2 Indian Languages fairly well although I cannot write in them.

I really don’t know what to compromise. A lot of places want 3-4 years but MIT wants 2. We all know the chances of getting into MIT

Can you tell me just how big of a deal it is?
