hahahahahahaha.

35 Harvard Alumni won Nobel Prize

17 MIT Alumni won Nobel Prize

Twice more Harvard Alumni got Nobel Prize even though MIT Science is about three times bigger than Harvard science department..

1 MIT ex president named Chuck Vest
0 Harvard ex presidents named Chuck Vest

oooooOOOOOOOOOOOOhhhh... you just been TOLD

whatcha gotta say about that now, smart guy huh huh huh.

Hey, crapfight!

While we're at it, I'll just throw my hat into the ring as well:

University of Michigan is greatest university in WHOLE AMERICA because we have most largest big network of <living> alumni!</living>

Take that, every other university! ;)

...

Naw just kidding, UMich is greatest university for other reasons ;)

lol, silly awards, MIT students are so good at math that they don't need to prove it anyone by winning any medals...

Mdx49, how many of these Harvard Nobels were won before WW2 and the Cold War defense buildup, when MIT was still a small school with few research facilities? Why don't you instead compare Nobels won since, say, the 1960's or so?

Furthermore, let's not discount the fact that quite a few of those Harvard Nobels came from Harvard Medical School. MIT does not have a medical school. Yet you have conveniently decided to ignore this fact. What's up with that?

Besides, I already asked you to explain why is it that Cambridge University has won so many more Nobels than Harvard has, and I told you to go back to the Harvard forum and tell them how embarrassing it must be for Harvard that Cambridge has won so many more. Looks like you forgot to do this task. Please do it before you come back here.

Harvard?

more like sukvard.

Go to MIT, join a frat, throw parties, get girls, and see the Harvard people all alone at their sucky parties w/o girls (worth hitting on).

Since MIT Science department is three times bigger than Harvard,

it is like Harvard having 35*3=105 Alumni who won Nobel Prize
Vs.
MIT having only 17 Alumni who won Nobel Prize

Actually, since there is no such thing as "Science deparment", its size is 0, and therefore MIT has the equivalent of infinity Nobel prizes, compared to Harvard's 35.

I recommend a third grade course in both English and mathematics for you. Then you will be at least 3*smarter than you are now.

If the math department is so much larger at MIT, then wouldn't one find more variety and depth in math classes offered? Same question about cs. Doesn't MIT offer more variety and depth in computer science than Harvard?

I'm not sure how relevant it is to base one's decision on which school has the better performing math team, unless one is truely competitive for, wants to participate in and is likely to be selected for the math team. Then math trophies might be one factor to consider in choosing between the two schools.

Actually Harvard's CS is pretty universally acknowledged to be not nearly as good as the programs at MIT, Carnegie-Mellon, Stanford, and Berkeley.

Maybe MIT has more variety of courses because it is bigger.
However, Harvard has much more higher quality of students than any other school in US. Why do you think most of american high school math competition winners choose to attend Harvard instead of MIT.

Why do you think Harvard is winnding Putnam math competitions consistently even if Harvard is 6 times smaller than MIT math ?

Why do you think so many Harvard Alumi have won Fields Medal and NO ONE from MIT ever won fields medal even if MIT math is 6 times bigger than Harvard ?

Why do Harvard Alumni won Nobel Prize more than any other school in US ?
(even though MIT physics, chem, departments are three times bigger than Harvard )

Harvard sciences/Math/Engineering programs are very small, but has highest quality student body in USA. MIT is not really at the same level as Harvard.

You also should remember that almost all of Harvard-MIT cross admits choose to attend Harvard.

mdx, are you a Harvard student?

My favorite part of this argument is how MIT gets penalized for not having a medical school or a bunch of people who win the Nobel in Literature or Peace, but then mdx49 still turns around and says that MIT's science departments are larger than Harvard's.

And I'm dying for an actual number on that cross-admit thing.

mdx is a Harvard troll, whatever else he is.

I have been the worst offender here, I readily admit, but I heartily suggest we stop feeding the troll. Unless he provides substantive (i.e. NOT REPETITIOUS NONSENSE) answers to Mollie's questions above, let us just ignore him and let the thread die.

Trolls go away due to starvation if we don't feed them.

Why are Princeton and Chicago grads consistently beating Harvard grads in winning the Wolf Prize in Math? The Wolf Prize is a more important honor than the Fields Prize.

Cambridge's science department is much smaller than Harvard's, yet Cambridge grads have won many many more Nobels. What's up with that, mdx49. Didn't you agree to write some posts about how shameful Harvard's performance has been relative to Cambridge's?

mdx, regarding your statement, " Harvard has much more higher quality of students than any other school in US." Do you have probative evidence for this statement as concerns MIT math/cs/science students in relation to Harvard math/cs/science students? Are you basing this on math SAT scores? or something else? This statement sounds like speculation to me.

Anecdotical evidence: I know one student who, as a very highly qualified math student, chose Harvard over MIT for math because he was concerned that the exceptionally gifted math students congregate at MIT and he knew he wasn't similarly gifted.

do not FEEEED. hungry troll go away.

SAT scores does not really tell you how good you are at math..

Evidence #1 ::
Putnam Math competition is the highest level math competition at Undergraduate level in US and MIT has been consistently ranked worse than Harvard EVEN THOUGH ::
About 130 MIT students are getting undergrad degree in math per year.
About 20 Harvard students are getting undergrad degree in math per year.

I did not even included mathematically oriented computer science and engineering students at MIT who also participated in Putnam competition.

As I mentioned before, Harvard won 25 putnam competition and MIT won only 4 putnam competition. 25 vs 4 is not comparable number. Since MIT math is 6 times bigger it is like Harvard winning 25*6=150 times versus 4 for MIT.

Harvard is also the most recent winning team.

2

Fields Medals are commonly regarded as mathematics' closest analog to the NObel Prize and are the highest scientific award for mathematicians. Harvard Alumni received Fields medal more than any other school in US EVEN THOUGH
Harvard is admitting only 7-8 students to PhD math program per year. MIT is admitting more than 30 students to math program per year. and NO ONE from MIT ever won Fields Medal.

Many people mistakenly think that MIT people are good at math because there are simply lots lots of MIT are getting math degree.

However, at the highest level of mathematics, Harvard Alumni has done much much better job than MIT alumni.

Why do you think Bill Gates choose to attend Harvard to study applied math and computer science instead of MIT ?

3

Most of top winners of American High school math competition winner choose to attend Harvard.
