Hello
I am an international student and i intend to apply for a PhD degree in mechanical engineering at MIT. At this page:

MIT MechE - Academic Programs - Graduate Programs - Applying For Admission

It is written "IELTS (preferred) or TOEFL for international students " are both accepted, But some friend told me that he had asked mechanical engineering department (via email) about this and they have told him that they just accept IELTS scores and do not accept TOEFL scores (even ibt). So anybody knows that if it is possible to send TOEFL scores for applying to MIT?
Thanks in advance

“i intend to apply for a PhD degree”

You need to contact the department directly and ask about their requirements. PHD admissions is completely different from undergraduate admissions, and it can be very different from one department to another even within the same institution.

Ok,I mailed them, Here is what i asked:
"
Hello
I am an international student and i intend to apply for a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering. At “Applying For Admission” page with this address:

[MIT MechE - Academic Programs - Graduate Programs - Applying For Admission](http://meche.mit.edu/academic/graduate/applying/)

It is written that Mechanical Engineering department accepts both IELTS and TOEFL IBT scores:

“IELTS (preferred) or TOEFL for international students whose native language is not English. Minimum acceptable score for IELTS = 7.0; TOEFL = 90 IBT, 233 CBT, 577 PBT”

But one of my friends that applied last year told me that he had asked you via email about this and the answer was: MIT department of Mechanical Engineering only accepts IELTS scores. So i really appreciate if you could inform me and tell me if TOEFL IBT score is accepted too."

Here is their very short answer:
"
Dear Mr. …,

We have changed our policy for this year.

Regards,

"

What does this mean? it means they are going just accept IELTS? I am really confused with their answer.

Your friend was told LAST YEAR that IELTS was necessary. THIS YEAR the website says that both exams are accepted. The departments changed its policy. TOEFL is OK.

Why they didn’t just write that is beyond me. Maybe they need to take an English exam!
