I am applying for the 2009 MITES program. I have a 4.0 GPA, take PreCalculus PreAP, Physics I PreAp, US History AP, Spanish IV AP, Biology II AP, English III AP, and Chemistry II AP. I am hispanic. I have a 4.0/4.0 GPA and rank 2/421. But, I have a low PSAT/SAT math scores, 58/570. Total PSAT/SAT scores 179/1830 (I know it's bad, I'm really bad at timed tests) Are there any alumni out there with scores close to this? Does anyone think it will matter with my other information?

Like I said in the other thread, there was at least one student last year with an 1800 SAT. Definitely apply, especially considering your GPA/rank. You've got as good a chance as any.

Your GPA and rank is higher than most of the students from last year. The SAT/PSAT is only one small part of your application, and the MITES admissions committee takes a holistic approach.

Thanks a lot for your information and encouragement Ouraqt!

I am applying for the MITES 2009 program. I have a 4.0/4.0 GPA, and I rank 10/1176 students. My PSAT scores also weren't that great: (65 in math) 186 total. I currently live in Tecas and I'm an African American 16-year-old who is currently taking IB English, IB History, Pre-AP Precalculus (that's all my school offers, and I have to take it before AP Cal), and AP Physics. Next year I am taking IB English IV, AP Government, IB Chemistry, and AP Calculus. What are my chances of making it in?

It all depends on how your essays and recommendations turn out. But so far, you're on a great track. If you're a good writer and teachers like you, you have an relatively excellent chance (and I say "relatively" because it's hard for anyone to get in).

Thanks for the hope Ouraqt. ;)

I have applied for the MITES 2009 Program. I have a 3.84 GPA (cumulative) and my SAT score was a 2190 and my PSAT was a 209 (98%). My math subscore for both the PSAT and the SAT is an 800. ANd I received a 780 in the Math IIC test, which I took in 9th grade and have yet to re-take it, in which i shall aim for the perfect. I live in California and am of Hispanic descent. This year, my classes are AP U.S. History, AP English Language, AP Calculus AB, AP Chemistry, Spanish 3 Honors, and orchestra. Last year, I took AP European History and received a 4. I received an excellent recommendation from my Chemistry teacher who rated me one of the best students in his entire career, but I don't know how my math teacher rated me. What are my chances of getting in?

yo guys! If any of you got rejected from MITES like me last yeart, don't lose hope!!! Instead of moping around, instead, I went to work in a lab near to MIT with a MIT professor! And I was admitted early action!

So, there is a chance you'll be rejected. If you're rejected, keep looking for anything else you can do for the summer, such as going to another research science summer camp, science or math focused camp, find a local professor to work with, etc.
