Mixed race

New to this board. I have a son sophmore at competitive public high school. He is half jewish and half chinese. I know he will not qualify as a minority. Is he "other", or amerasian, or what? Thanks!

Being Jewish isn't a race, it is a religion, so that won't make a difference. You can list "other" or "amerasian" if that category is an option on the application.
PS- welcome to the board :)

Check the specific form you need to fill out each time you have a form to fill out. I just asked my son how he wanted to fill out a scholarship application form, and he decided--this time--to check a box of "Multi-racial (Specify)" and then specify, using categories from other lines on the form, "Asian American-Caucasian." My own preference is not to fill out questions like that. Ethnic self-identification questions are OPTIONAL on the Common Application and on most college and scholarship applications, so you needn't answer at all if that is inconvenient to you.

Harvard University reports, in its Fact Book, that about 9 percent of its undergraduate students and about 11 percent of all students at all levels had "other/unknown" ethnicity--which probably means that most of those students didn't self-report any ethnic designation, or reported a mixed designation. The growing trend today is for more and more college applicants to treat the optional questions about ethnicity as just that, OPTIONAL, and not fill them out.

Best wishes in deciding what to do. Are you the Chinese parent? "Si hai zhi nei, jie xiong di ye," shi bu shi?

OOps, half caucasian and half chinese. Thanks!!

I found it interesting to note that on the ACT website, the chart that shows National Average Composite Score by Race/Ethnic Group 2004, identifies the group with the highest average composite score as "prefer not to respond."

token adult... it's hard to get chinese from english... all i recognized was the is that right at the end* and i speak mandarin fluently

He will certainly qualify for URM status at certain schools. I don't want to discuss private info about other students, but I know of some with your background. Don't email, that is an old address, but you can use this site's Private Messages if you like.

My preference is to fill out questions like this; I think demographic information is very important to gather. (But in our case we are just not going to benefit, I just think some should.)
