I meant more jobs to fill than students…
Exactly. Trying to get into the minds of recruiters and grad schools is futile. A lot of what grad schools look for are GPA and test scores (work experience too for MBA), and you can get a high GPA if you work hard wherever you go. Sometimes I wish I had gone to a more fun school than Michigan, but I’m overall glad that I went.
Our DD took a full tuition ride at ASU Barrett over Michigan and several good UCs. She’s looking at…supply chain. If she graduates from ASU with a degree in supply chain, she will get tons of offers (vs a liberal arts degree from UM), saved $220K over Michigan, and had a lot of fun in a warm climate all at the same time. We are going to give her the difference in money from what we saved for in state at a UC. She had some doubts about going to a lower ranked school, but I asked her recently if she was happy and she is very much so. So glad she learned that lesson and didn’t fall for the con that is high rankings.
Hope mine has the same experience at College of Charleston - where - they don’t have a renowned major like ASU and Supply Chain - but she’s a Charleston Fellow and Intl. Scholar - basically their version of the highest level students - with mentoring and internships and all that, but we’ll see.
She got into Washington & Lee - which is perfect for what she wants - working in a DC type job - they place 2nd most students per capita of any school - behind Sewanee of all places - but at $81K vs. $30K and most importantly, of all the schools she got into: yes, UGA (Honors), Florida, South Carolina (Honors), American, she felt a spark at Charleston like no other…my wife took her a 2nd trip and an hour in she knew - that was the right place for her. I hope it works.
ASU for supply chain is aces!!! The career may be boring sorry - but - I had, in grad school, just an elective there and Fed Ex was all over me and offered me a job. Michigan State and TN are similar in that regard.
Congrats to your daughter - and for you on the savings. Nice that you’re going to gross her up the difference.
Charleston is a great place to go to school, especially at that price! Such a cool town and school, and nice weather during the school year. You guys are saving $200K over 4 years. Those are all really good programs, but she has found her home!
She’s happy and not in debt. That’s what is most important!
I have friends that went to W&L. Great school, and they speak highly of it, but it’s not like they’re ripping it up or anything.
And Sewanee is also an excellent school. I have a classmate from high school that went there and now is in the administration. It’s a dynamic place in a great location. They conducted school all year in a bubble.
We shall see with supply chain. They have a faculty member that is a rock star so I believe he is one reason the school is so well thought of. I think I want to encourage her to mix it with something like sustainability, which ASU has a very good program in as well. She might not have the tolerance for something boring. (I found operations in my MBA program surprisingly interesting, but we didn’t focus heavily on logistics/supply chain much) She’s also thinking of getting a master’s degree from Thunderbird in Global Mgmt which her scholarship allows.
Awesome for her. Eventually kids will find their place just as we all have done !
