I have heard good things about the program but I wanteed to know how competitive is it to get into the program? What sort of things do they look for in an applicant?

I have heard good things about the program but I wanteed to know how competitive is it to get into the program? What sort of things do they look for in an applicant?

Hey Colts, I’m a freshman at NU right now and I’m in MMSS. It’s a great program if you’re into that field, we do a lot of math and social science (pretty much econ). It’s not terribly difficult to get into from what I’ve heard, most people who apply to NU and get in and apply to MMSS get in, it seems like. The program is more self selective than anything. I didn’t think about NU until April and applied late to MMSS and I was one of few late applicants to get in however. They just look for good math AP scores, SAT, SATIIs and thats about all. They just want to make sure you can handle the math, which admittedly is easier than MENU.

i’d read the alum newsletter and internship directory (both are on the MMSS website) to get some idea about what students and alums have done. of course what you learn and what you do at work are not the necessarily the same thing and often only loosely related but the info would still help you understand the program better and may help you write the MMSS application.

MMSS is essential to get internships out of NU easier than your Math/Econ compadres. I know plenty of MMSS Seniors with jobs in hand now and Math/Econ majors with nothing to show for it.

thanks for the info NUraider. Yea i’m definitely hoping to get into the program, because NU is one of my top choices and getting into that program would pretty much seal the deal for me.

How rigorous is the program compared to a normal math/econ major?

Though you’ll hear a lot of mixed reviews about the course load for MMSS it’s honestly not bad at all. The classes are very manageable and if you go to class/pay attention it is not too difficult.

A normal econ major is quite easy, no math at all, so the MMSS classes are a little more difficult simply because they have more math. But I’d almost go so far to say that a math major would be as difficult or more difficult than the math required of MMSS.

econ is an easy major to get, it’s kinda hard to get all A’s since it’s such a popular major. MMSS courseload is not bad.

If you don’t get into MMSS the first year, you can apply later and get in so long as you take MENU which is essentially the same as what MMSS kids take. MENU is a math sequence, it’s pretty tough with all the kids that are good at math, so beware, it’s not an easy road to take.
