Mock Trial team?

Can someone please tell me whether or not Bucknell has a Mock Trial team (plus any info. about size of team, win/loss record, advisers, possible contact, etc., if one exists)? Couldn’t find any mention of Mock Trial on the Student Activities/Clubs page of the web site. Jr. D. is very interested in Bucknell, but involvement in Mock Trial at the college-level is a major requirement for her.

I don’t believe we have a mock trial team. I can tell you that there is a group of students in the process of building something along the lines of a speech/presentation club slash resource. The student organizations like Bucknell Business Leaders may also have a more forensics-type competition. The student-run John Marshall pre-law society has also been talking about sponsoring mock cases, debates, etc.

I can tell you that I was very involved in mock trial in high school and though I would probably have liked to see it here at Bucknell, I have found plenty of other things to do that complement my interests and abilities.

Does Bucknell have an academic team?

What is required to join?

I’m not exactly sure what an academic team is. We had a College Bowl team (trivia competition) until the national organization fell apart last year; we have not yet found a replacement nationally.

^Any team that is a member of NAQT (National Academic Quiz Teams) would work. It appears most colleges (over half, anyway) are.

I was just wondering because Academic Team is like my “sport”, my true frivolous passion. I love it.

BucknellBubbly, Thanks for the info., especially about your own experience. The pre-law society and debate options sound promising, and D. is a pretty enterprising kid who would not be averse to working with other students to bring mock trial to her college-of-choice. What’s your “read” on how receptive the administration would be to students advocating to bring another activity/club/team to Bucknell?

It is incredibly easy to start a new club or organization. You can apply to Bucknell Student Government for funding as long as you have a budget, and although I’m not sure of the exact mechanisms for all of that, I know it’s not excessively difficult.

(I tell my tours about one of my friends here who decided his freshman year that Bucknell needed a club quidditch team. He went to BSG and now, although he’s graduated, his quidditch team lives on.)

Honestly, the biggest challenge for fledgling clubs is not the adminstration’s approval but student support. However, I think that a mock trial team would be something that would probably be of interest to Bucknell students; especially the political science and legal studies students.

My daughter applied and she is on a very competitive Mock Trial team in New York State as well. If she gets accepted and attends Bucknell I know she would be very interested in being on a team there too. Maybe they can start one together :-)
