Model U.N.

I am going to join Model United Nations this year. I know the basic premise of it, there are delegates that represent different nations and debate at conferences. i was wondering if anyone else could share some of their experience or adivce with this activity.Thanx

I am interested in finding a chapter somewhere or potentially starting my own.

I found a good site about it:
<a href="http://cyberschoolbus.un.org/modelun/index.asp%5B/url%5D">http://cyberschoolbus.un.org/modelun/index.asp</a></p>

I went to a model UN last year. It was tons of fun, just remember that in order to participate you must know your countries point of view on the topics discussed. We had a couple of people that didn't know what their countries point of view was and just made things up. This made it very complicated for the rest of the people to debate on issues concerning that particular country. So be prepared. Also be prepared to be put on the spot by other countries, so always keep up with debates and know what your countries opinions are on the topic discussed and think about possible answers for questions being asked to other delegates because they might end up coming to you. Most of all have fun. Model UN is not for grades (at least it wasn't for me, but who knows) it's just to widen your understanding of world issues and practice debate, so just have a good time, noone's going to judge you on the things you do. Noone except the other students in you committee, but that's about it.

You should study thoroughly ahead of time. Be sure to know various nation's opinions, and more specifically, be sure you know those of the country you are representing. People can get...nasty...I've seen people also launch questions at people that are difficult for you to answer. They want to see you squirm. That's the main premise for many. It's always fine to yield your remaining time to the chair.:)
