Moderation

Thoughts on the “Moderation” step of Bard?

Do you feel like this hinders the Liberal Arts experience of truly studying what you love at all?

Not really sure what your question is. Are you asking if it hinders because you have to declare a major and prove that you’re ready to major in it? This happens at other colleges, as well, for certain majors in particular, just not with the formal presentation before a panel and the submission of essays.

When we looked at Bard, this was one of the (many) things that stood out for me as being so, so smart. It makes the choice of a major intentional (rather than the “I have to pick something so why not the path of least resistance…”). You need to explain how you chose it and why you want to do it. Having to think through this clearly enough to articulate it (and defend your choice) to the people who will be teaching and supporting you seems wise. This seems like a great way of making sure that thought and reflection have gone into this decision. As is the case anywhere, you can take classes outside your major.
