Modern Orthodox Jews

Are there any schools with a decent sized Modern Orthodox Jewish community that has a kosher meal plan? I know Brandeis fits my needs, but I just want to look into some more options. Yeshiva University is WAY to religous for me. I've already looked on hillel.org, but that didn't seem to help me much. Thoughts anyone?

Columbia and Barnard both have kosher meal plans and sizable Jewish communities (Barnard is something like 40% Jewish), though I don't know what percentage of that is Modern Orthodox.

Thanks for the reply. These 2 schools however don't fit me(I can't get into Columbia, and I am a male). Also, you made a very important point. There are many colleges which have huge Jewish populations. One that comes to mind is my favorite college, Emory, which has 2,000 Jewish students. However, the Modern Orthodox Jewsih community there is miniscule there, as it is in most schools. Thus, I am faced with a huge dilemna. Keep the advice coming please!

University of Maryland has a very large Jewish population

Do you know if there is a large representation of modern orthodox jews there?

Boxing Leprechan -- I am not Jewish, but I remember some great threads that were discussed the past two years regarding Jews and campuses.

I will post some links -- the first link is the search I did on CC, and the other links are threads I remember providing excellent info. I realize this may be more general than specifically orthodox, but it should help.

hsmostef, thank you so much, these links are great. Keep the advice coming!

Goucher College has a significant Jewish population and a Kosher meal plan.

icesk8mom, do you have any experience with Goucher? It's also funny you should mention Goucher, as I was considering taht as one of my safeties, depending on financial aid.

Boston University has a large population of Modern Orthodox - the rabbi at Hillel is Chasidic but extremely accepting of Modern Orthodox, Conservative and even Reform students. It also has a Kosher kitchen.

NYU
Rutgers
Binghamton
Maryland
BU
U. Florida
U. Hartford
Rochester

Chedva, Boston University sounds great, and I must do some more research on it. Huskem55, the schools you mentioned are for the most part the natithesis of the program that I want(although I didnt mention that, so its not your fault). And Hartford sounds good(they have TONS of scholarships, however, it is ranked as only a 4th tier school(I'm aiming for near ivy or a little below that).

My mothers rabidly anti-Semitic boyfriend refers to NYU as NYJew; perhaps that would suit your needs.

redknight, lol on the story. The issue with NYU is the ridiculous tuition vs. scholarships and huge class sizes.

I'm glad you find it funny. He rants about the "numerous" dental students who stole his homework.

But he's from Westchester, so go figure.

Lol. Now, if only I had 172,000 dollars to afford NYU.

You might try McGill. Though I doubt they have a Kosher meal plan, Montreal has an extensive (and very vibrant) Jewish community. Several of their residences do not have a meal plan, but there is much kosher fare to be had cheaply in Montreal.

Well, according to my brought-up-Jewish father, Vassar College has historically had a nice-sized Jewish population. I also recall hearing about all sorts of meal options, so I'm pretty sure they have Kosher options if not an actual Kosher meal plan.

Anything in Chicago will have a sizable Jewish population.

Redknight, thigh McGill seems extremely interesting, I doubt I have the credentials for teh top university in Canada. Littleathiest, I am currently doing research on Vassar, and will know a little more about it soon. world changer, you are correct that there is a good Jewish population in Chicago(as in all metropolises). However, I only know of 2 schools in Chicago(U. of Chicago and Northwestern) and I can't get into both.
