can some current students or parents of current students share the pros and cons of traditional versus modern dorms at WUSTL? Thanks.

Also, on a related topic, could anybody elaborate on the dorms themselves specifically? As in, pros and cons of each dorm?

I was also wondering whether most freshman find roommates to room with or if the majority are randomly paired together.

The traditional dorms for freshmen are complete crap.

I'd disagree - I lived in old dorms for 2 years by choice, and never regretted it. What exactly do you think is "complete crap", as you so eloquently put it?

Some students prefer the traditional dorms, because there's more interaction between students in those.

Eventually all the dorms at WashU will be the modern dorms. Each year or so, they tear down another traditional dorm and replace it with new ones. D lived in a new dorm this year and it truly is lovely. Most kids do feel however, that the traditional dorms are more social. One of the big reasons for this is that the traditional dorms have communal, single sex bathrooms which forces everyone to get out of their rooms alot. The modern dorms are more apartment like, and most freshman modern dorms have two double rooms sharing one bathroom. Definitely more convenient, but you can go into your room, close the door and not see anyone if you want. The new dorms are also more expensive.

ResLife says that around 90% of kids request the new dorms but that those who land up in the traditional ones land up loving them for the social life. My D says that the traditional dorms definitely have more hall activity and socializing going on.

Who cleans the bathrooms in Modern Dorms, the students? If not, then cleaning staff has access to your room?

There are two doors in the new dorms - One to a mini-hallway with some shelves and a door to the bathroom, and then one to the actual room. Housekeeping does not have access to the inner door.
