I hope to study Economics & Molecular engineering at UChicago. Although the school is world renowned for econ, I ve not heard as much abt the molecular engineering track.
I really love the Molecular Engineering description given by UChicago, but I also read that it is not ABET credited. I understand that UChicago is primarily a liberal arts college and this is their first engineering program, but I would like to understand what are the future prospects of going into this field. It seems very similar to BME (Biomedical Engineering) but still has its differences - in fact, to my knowledge, it is the only school that offers this major.
I would be grateful if you all could provide your critique (+ / -) Txs in advance!
While I can’t critique Molecular Engineering at UChicago I can comment on the ABET accreditation. The bottom line is that ABET accreditation is much more important for schools that don’t have a stellar reputation. They need the ABET to accredit there programs in order to have some credibility for there graduates. If you work in the private sector it will be a non issue (since you will have graduated from UChicago and the school is recognized as an elite University by most), the government on the other hand might be an issue, since it is heavy on bureaucracy, and some in that bureaucracy might not be very well informed. Most engineering positions in the government require you to have have an engineering degree from an ABET accredited University, however that can be waived based on coursework at the University where you studied. Any hiring manager with any knowledge whatsoever of UChicago will auto waive the ABET requirement, but not all are so bright to do so.
