Mom Of A Junior Looking for Input

Yikes, this all seems so overwhelming - I have a junior who has a b+ unweighted average (Freshman and Sophomore year)- but seems to be doing better academically junior year - we just went on naviance for the first time and are deflated - how realistic is naviance and do colleges factor in better junior and senior years?

What kind of schools were you looking for?

We found Naviance to be fairly accurate for our school - but it only showed UW GPAs and would’ve been more helpful (for us) to show weighted.

If this is Naviance for your school (as opposed to logging on as a guest at some random school), then, yeah, it’s pretty reliable. You don’t know the backstories to those dots and diamonds (is that low outlier a recruited athlete or kid of a big donor?), but the numbers are what they are.

Yes, colleges do like an upward trend. Not sure how much upward it would have to be to make a difference.

Please join us on the Class of 2013/2017 thread. Lots of junior parents in your boat. :)

ETA: Our school uses weighted. Each school can set its parameters as it sees fit.

As a physics professor at [Illinois Institute of Technology](http://www.iit.edu) and a parent of 3 (last one applying to college this year) I would say that most schools do take into consideration improvement in the last years of high school. They also take into account how challenging the course selection is.

That being said, at a very selective school where there are many, many applications, it is harder to get into the pool where the applications are scrutinized individually. At a smaller school, there is more of a chance that each application is given a thorough review.

thank you

as I am new to this

How do I get onto the link for 2013- 2017?

thanks!

Don’t be intimidated by the length of the thread. It’s just taken off in the past couple of weeks with the release (for some) of PSAT scores. Jump right in!

Here you go  That’s the beginning of the thread, but feel free to jump in on the end and join us for the ride.

LOL YDS: You beat me!

Naviance for your own school is about as good as info gets on your DSs chances. Junior year is important, but so is consistency. The higher the admit rate at the college, the more 3 year consistency matters. At less selective schools a pop junior year can carry the day.

ATough - The truth will set you (and your student) free to find a good education at an affordable cost. You’re just getting started. It will be OK. Really!
