Mon chances for Chapel Hill

Have great grades is great, but having great grades while taking AP Chem, Calc, etc would be better.

It might seem a little bit intimidating.

Are any of you guys on this thread in-state?

im OOS. snickers - it depends if you're instate or out, and what classes you got those grades in (like xistrep said).

1200 on the old scale? Doesn't sound bad to me. You're not really silly for applying anywhere...it's not impossible or anything

True nothing's impossible but these days with admissions it really seems like it. 1200 isn't great though, its actually below average. I believe the average is around 1350 or so?

Again - depends for UNC on OOS or instate. In state, I could see 1200 as definitely fitting if you were good across the rest of the board. Less than 1200 for out of state, i would imagine, would only mean acceptance if something else proved outstanding. Definitely don't think you're silly for doing it. my friend applied to Notre Dame with a profile way below the school's - because he loves notre dame and has always wanted to go there. So think of it like this, as he does - if you get in, basically a dream come true - if not, at least you tried and made a shot at those dreams! no one can begrudge you trying. I actually think that UNC does not release it's OOS accepted students profile (SAT scores etc) so that others don't get discouraged from applying because of numbers.

Yes, you are absolutely right. I applied to UNC because i fell in love with the school even though I am below the standards..in some areas. That made me feel alot better about whether I am accepted or not. Thanks!

Actually, the average SAT score for each section is about 500. The expectations just get so hyped up that students begin to think the average score is astronomical. So the average score, on the new scale, is 1500.

Blair, i think you mean the average of ALL sat test takers. we're talking about the average for OOS UNC admits.

Yes, that is what I meant. However, no one can truly know that average because they don't post SAT averages for OOS students. I would say it is definitely in the 2000 range, but I would not say it is astronomical as some might say.

I dont think its as high as a lot of people emphasize ("you really need 1450+") but I think you need pretty high scores... a 1500, i would imagine, would put you in the no pile for OOS.. you can look at the accepted students from CC thread and get a feel for a good SAT score to have.. I'd say 1950+ would give you a chance and 2050+ would give you a pretty good chance (in the testing department)

I agree!
