monologues

Ok, reading the thread on CMU about being asked to perform multiple monologues has us a bit panicked!! So should my D have multiple monologues in her tool belt so to speak? How do people know this if the requirements don't say this?!? This process is going to make me crazy!

Sometimes they will ask if you have anything else. So it’s probably better to have at least one more just in case. But not everyone gets asked. I wasn’t and got into a couple of good programs. CMU is not the only one that does this. If you have more great but if it’s too late I wouldn’t worry about it much. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have choices.

preklbt, your D should have 4 monologues. 3 will do, but 4 is better. Is that what you mean by multiple? Ideally, it should be 2 classical, 2 contemporary, all contrasting (showing her in a different light each time). THey will ask her to perform 2 monologues usually, and possibly another. actor12 wasn’t asked to do another, but often if they’re interested or want to get a better sense of you, they will ask. Then you should have a 4th ‘just in case’—a callback that day, another request, etc. If she only has 2 right now, just add a 3rd. There is still time. :-)

connections - is that for MT? I thought just those auditioning for Acting required so many. We have 2 for the audition (including the classical)and one additional (her 2nd contemporary for all her other MT auditions)

It you are auditioning for Carnegie Mellon, you should have a Shakespeare monologue prepared too.

My son is auditioning for MT and works with MTCA: They want him to have 4 monologues and have stressed that from the beginning as being very important. One of them is Shakespeare – he’s been working on that one for a while and glad of it! This Wednesday he’s auditioning for the local Shakespeare Festival, which-- if cast-- would be his summer job. (And he’s also auditioning at CMU.)

kategrizz, yes, it would be for MT and straight. But probably for MT you can only have one Shakespeare–some schools wouldn’t require the Shakespeare; it depends on the school. I’m making a general statement that would have you be prepared for all the auditions. Each school is different, and often each audition panel is different. You just don’t know what they’ll ask and what they’ll want and you want to be prepared. If you only have 2, you really have time to add a 3rd. If you can’t add the 3rd for now, don’t panic. Maybe focus on it for later auditions. And if you just can’t add the 3rd, then you can’t.

I agree you need 3, including one classical. For some reason I thought the question was about 4. I needed 3 and could have used another one to switch things up but was never asked for a 4th. Sorry, if that was unclear.

Thanks everyone! Sorry if I wasn’t more clear, she currently has 2 monologues, but I had read a thread about CMU & some people did multiple monologues-some did 4, some said 7! So we got very nervous.
I am seeing now that after reading CMU’s requirements we do need to make a change as the requirements say one monologue from a play written before 1900, which is not what our current 2 are and not even what we are thinking for a third either. We didn’t initially have CMU on our list when we first picked her material.
Does anyone have any suggestions, for a pre1900 play for a girl?

Thanks again!

Holy moley! Thank goodness I read this thread. My son did the CMU pre-college MT, and they only required one monologue for the audition at the end of the session. He will have a classical piece in his repertoire, but I did not have the requirement written down.
