More about ACT

I got a 29 on the ACT and plan to take/send the December test. Should I send the 29 as well? I’m worried it will look bad, but it seems like you need to fill out the part 1 of the app before you can even start on the essays!

What about SAT?

Yeah, send the 29, if you send a better score later they'll just look at that one. Plus, Brown takes the highest score from each section of the ACT, not just one sitting like a lot of schools. So if you have a particularly good section, that could help when you send your new score.

Are you serious about superscoring the ACT... can someone confirm this? I thought only Wash U did that...

if that's true, that is great for me. I got a 33.25, ONE point away from a 34 on my most recent test (ACT rounds up). But on my first ACT, I got a 31.5 (so 32), but my reading score was one point higher than it was on my second test... so that would mean for Brown, I have a 34 ACT, which rocks. Yes... if you're right artyyy, that would be great for me.

Yeah, I'm serious. I called the admissions office. A lot of schools are doing it now.

What other schools are doing this perchance?

I called the admissions office twice and they said only the best composite.

illinois_kid- Bucknell is. So are a bunch of other schools on my list, I have it written down at school, but not on me right now.

college59- I called also, they said they take the best scores from each category from different sittings. That's weird.

I asked in person at the info session...I was told best composite. Ill be upset if they were wrong...I would have retaken!

By best composite you mean they don't superscore right?

WashU superscores. Thanks for the tip about Bucknell. Anyone else? By the way, not to hijack your thread or anything but if I have a 32 "superscore" (31 in a single sitting) but a 2200 SAT (1420) should I bother sending Bucknell both ACTs or just forget the ACT?

wustled- yes, I knew wash u superscored. As for sending your scores, a 2200 is definitely better than a 31 (32 superscore), but the difference isn't very big, so I think you'd be good with sending both.

Brown doesn't superscore. They do look at individual subscores for your highest composite score though.

About this super scoring business: I have contacted the admissions office twice (different person answered the phone each time) and they both confirmed that Brown does indeed superscore the ACT. However, if anyone else has done so and gotten an answer, it wouldn't hurt to post it because we seem to be getting different info about this.

i emailed the office, i got they take highest subscores. they dont necessarily GIVE you a NEW superscore, but they do look at the highest subsections.

When I asked the office last year before retaking it again in June (I had a 32 on my first sitting with a 35 in English and a 36 in Reading and was unsure of whether or not it was worth it to take it again and risk dropping in those), they told me that they do NOT look at your highest collective subscores, rather only your highest composite. Maybe they will look at your other subscores, but what counts is your highest composite in a single sitting.

Regardless, a 29 is the median score for Brown students, so yes, I would submit that. If your retake yields a higher composite, send that along as well.

As for SAT/ACT scores, if you have essentially comparable scores on the two (a 31 is something like a 1390-1410), send both so that you show versatility. They can then pick one or the other. Unless of course you have an SAT II score that you aren't proud of.
