In addition to the great student’s film “Mamitas” by alumnus Nicholas Ozeki that hits the theaters as feature, here is what so encouraging: "this is promising news to film students everywhere, especially those located in Orange County and Hollywood; as weve known for years, a great idea, an eye for human nature, a driving sense of passion, and the tools of production which we place in students hands from day one are the only barriers to the current film industry. With Nicks success, you can see the proof for yourself on the big screen! "

Holy Macro! Wow…all of these Dodge alumni films, can’t wait to go see! Congrats to everyone! Go Panthers!

Whoo-HOoooOO!

And, oh my gosh, weren’t Matt and Ross so funny at the Dodge parents’ event? It was so great of Dodge to have those two bros plus Bob Basset’s son up there giving us a realistic picture of what life is like for film students after they graduate. No question the three of them could tell it like it is! You can tell they all work like crazy too. Best of luck to Matt and Ross with this movie!

Matt and Ross wanted to produce their own movie. There was nothing else they wanted to do. They did not want to work on someone elses movie first the way that most graduates break into this industry. When ask why they didnt want to find a job using the skills they had learned at Dodge they said it was all or nothing for them. The viewpoint they presented was their viewpoint only; we felt they did not represent a normal graduate that comes out of Dodge or any other Film College and were not very helpful for the parents of perspective admittees with their comments. Remember also there are seven (7) other majors besides Film Production at Dodge College that this parent meeting was for. We attended a Television Production/Broadcast Journalism career night for students already in this program last week. They had six (6) women whom had graduated from Dodges Television Production/Broadcast Journalism program within the past 2 to 3 years and they were all working in the industry in very impressive jobs. They talked about how one starts from the bottom up in this industry but because students have gained the skills in so many different areas of the industry at Dodge College that when given the chance to show what they knew they are able to succeed.

Agree that Matt and Ross are very unique, (though, uh, similar…) . I thought the presentation for parents was balanced by Kent Bassett who worked basically as a “gopher” for two years – doing menial chores and errands like transporting materials from one end of town to the other. Then, because of his training at Dodge, his proven reliability and his position on the inside, Kent eventually wrangled a position at the same company as an editor, which is not his life’s goal, but provides a living wage for now. Seemed like a good balance of the unique and lucky (Matt and Ross) with the usual start off in the “mailroom” route (Kent). In both cases, persistence was the common factor that paid off for these young men.

Also thought their message about being a good team player, a super dedicated student who works late into the night, and an overall nice person people want to work with was relevant for all students at Dodge wanting to work in the industry.

suka, Say more about the career night you attended for TV/BJ. Why was it all women, and what sorts of jobs did they have? It is great to hear that graduates come back to speak to current Dodge students. The school seems to have a practical, career-oriented focus with the goal of employment in sight, rather than a more dreamy art for art’s sake focus like some of the schools we visited.

Thank you for reminding us that there are more than one Dodge majors. My son will be in Television/Broadcast J. This is his first choice, not because he didn’t get into film prod. I did not really enjoy the “Matt and Ross” show. They were very vocal about not having any minors or even outside interests. It works for them, but it was nice to talk to Mr. James Gardner, the director of Television Studies, who encouraged my son to pursue a music minor and have other interests. It will be a balance that my son will have to figure out for himself (I think a music minor may be a bit much but maybe he can still play in the orchestra). I remember thinking that if the school turns out jerks like Matt and Ross maybe this isn’t the right place for my kid. I guess they needed to show us “successful” students.
