More Textbook Tips (business & other students)

Almost every freshman has to take English 1010 which uses the Everyday Writer textbook 5th edition..... List price is $72.00....Amazon currently sells it new for $48 new and you can rent it for $26 from skyo.com with no shipping charges either way and they allow you to do some highlighting and note taking in the book. I chose to buy it since I thought it is a good book to have as a reference, but renting would have been great option as well.

Also, a lot of kids have to take Psychology 1000.... which uses Psychology by Myers 10th edition... Book is ridiculously expensive to buy $187, and it is of not much use to keep if you are not a psychology major. I rented it on bookrenter.com for $36 til Dec 20...free shipping both ways... Also noticed that the renting prices varied a lot by company, so check multiple places

The Econ 1010 textbook (Principles Micro.) I chose to buy new from Amazon ($170) with no sales tax when shipped to LA since I wanted to make sure that I had the access card, and rental prices were very high. Also, looks like as if this book seems to have a good resale value...so will take my chance to resell it myself after she is done.

The Tides Class textbook " Understanding Michael Porter" can easily be found used on the web for a few bucks

I held off on purchasing the foreign language text book for my daughter on the web since I was worried that it would be a hassle to return it if she got moved into a higher/lower class than initially assigned...so will need to buy that one from Tulane bookstore..

On a final note, if you want to save a few bucks and buy books on-line, get going on it since it may take 7-10 business days to get there (unless it's Amazon of course).

Thanks for the bookrenter tip Calm. Students and parents should verify what books they need. My son has engl 1010 and does not need the Everyday Writer text.

Jammer159…
That is scary…I just went by what the Tulane bookstore says are the requirements for each class. How did you find out that everyday writer is not needed?
Well, I can return to amazon if not needed for 30 days…but this really concerns me.

I have been going to the bookstore site. My son has 1010 -05 it shows three novels and no text. In fact, the novels were just added today. Up until today the Engl and TIDB indicated not assigned. I still have to get the Econ book and access.
Which 1010 is your child in?

Different teachers require different books. It’s best to go through the Order books link on Gibson to get the accurate list for your student’s particular class.

1020-3… I went by list generated by Tulane Gibson website…" Order books"

Forgot to mention that list was generated by the tulane bookstore after signing into my daughter’s Gibson account…so it was specific for her schedule.

My daughter had heard that some profs don’t require the complete textbook bundle as posted. Bookstore said she has seven days from start of each class for a full refund if she wanted to return any books from the bundle.

If anybody is taking physics 1310, the book required for it, new with access code, is only $109 right now on Amazon vs. $190+tax at the bookstore. When I checked the other day, it was $155 so the price came down but I’m not sure how long it’s going to stay down.

My son keeps insisting that “everyone” says that he should wait for the classes to start to buy the books. This of course is making the neurotic, plan ahead mom in me crazy!! I gave him the job of looking into the book sites (amazon, bookstore etc) and this is his plan. Thoughts??

I thinks it probably fine, but you may end up having less selection with used books. They keep them pretty busy the first few nights with welcome week events, so not a lot of studying goes on those first few days! I would definitely be sure you set up an Amazon Prime or Amazon Student account so you can take advantage of the two day free shipping. He can have pretty much everything by the end of the week.

I purchased used books in a couple of cases where online access codes were required and emailed the links to buy the access codes later to S2’s Tulane email address. He can download those and pay for them with my credit card when he confirms that he is keeping the class and needs the access code. Maybe you can satisfy your inner planner by locating those and doing the same. :)

Sometimes I feel like renting is like throwing money away. You can get your books for free most of the times or sometimes make a little bit of a profit getting them in good condition used and reselling them when the semester is over. Here is how I usually do it: [Saving Money on Textbooks](http://www.squidoo.com/saving-money-on-textbooks2)
