Questions!

How does being a morehead cain scholar affect your college experience other than financially?

And what does UNC look for in a morehead cain scholar? What would be like a "checklist" in your opinion to even be considered for it?

I can’t speak to the first question, but having just come back from the Finalists weekend, I have some insight about the second.

The initial screening process requires that you stand out on paper. They narrow to 15% for semifinals and 6% to finals. The generic grades + standardized tests are a prereq but not something to make you stand out. They’re looking for exceptional ECs/service. Physical vigor doesn’t necessarily mean athletic superstar. I (lol) am definitely not, but I sorta-kinda go to the gym sometimes and I guess that was enough.

For finals, the interview is crucially important. Be articulate and insightful, but also stay humble and be able to laugh at yourself. My interview was quite serious compared to other peoples’ - we talked about current events and politics.

My son is a Sophomore at UNC and was a Morehead finalist but was not selected as a scholar. By far most of his current friends (including his current roommate) are Morehead scholars that he met during his finalist weekend. Based on what he has told me my impression is that being a Morehead scholar has almost no bearing on your day to day life at UNC and it really doesn’t impact your opportunities within the school. Obviously the money is nice and the summers abroad are great but otherwise it doesn’t play into your day to day experience within the school or in your classes.
