Morehead-Cain Scholarship

Any applicants on CC?

Yep. Waiting for Tomorrow?

My son just found out he is a semifinalist. I assume the other instate applicants have been notified by now as well.

MY D is an out-of-state finalist!

Congratulations! Good luck in the process, you should all be very honored!

How do you think the experience compares to Stanford or the Ivies?

I'm not sure there is anyone who can answer that question from firsthand knowledge and without knowing what matters to your D. All of those experiences are going to be fantastic. My D (who only made it to the semifinalist stage of the Morehead process) has a friend who turned down a Morehead Scholarship to attend Yale and is incredibly happy at Yale. EAdad's son turned down Yale to accept a Morehead, and if you search for his posts, you'll see that he's had an incredible experience at UNC.

I would recommend waiting till all of the offers are in and then seeing what appeals to your D. Schools and scholarships look very different when there's a written offer in hand.

Thanks. My D has always wanted Stanford, and applied EA, but she is determined to remain open-minded. I think she will be sad, but not crushed, if she is rejected from Stanford. The more I read about the Morehead program, the more it fits her. She is a very kind and giving person....does well due to her own interests, not in an effort to top anyone else. The Morehead seems so focused on giving back to the community....something she does naturally, not just to look good to colleges. She took the SAT once, and was happy with her score (2280)....she loves learning for its own sake, and takes all APs only because she wants to learn. When I read about these kids who are so obsessed with perfect scores and a list of ECs a mile long, I think if that's what certain colleges want, maybe she wouldn't be happy there anyway. Things do often seem to work out for the best. My only preference is to have her closer to home (So. Cal), because she's been at an east coast boarding school for last year and this year. I miss her and her smiling face.

I just found out that I'm an out of state finalist. Cgarrett, what East Coast boarding school does your daughter attend? The only reason I ask is cause I go to one (St. Paul's)

Any tips from previous morehead (semi) finalists/scholars?

Two of my really good friends are Moreheads and turned down Georgetown and Duke (among others). They're both really happy that they did so, even though they're still just first years. :)

My main tip: In interviews, BE YOURSELF. And don't feel the need to be overly bubbly or anything. Just be the best you you can be.
