Ok, so i'm an OOS student from a school that I just found out will not be a morehead nominating school next year. this means that I will not be able to fill out the online app for the morehead. I am interested in both the morehead and robertson, but given the choice I would apply to the morehead. I was wondering that since I will not directly apply to the morehead, can I complete the robertson supplement, and then if I don't move on in that competition, can I still be nominated for the morehead by the UNC admissions people?

I believe that sometime in the last few years they changed the rules so that you either cannot apply for both (if in state or from a nominating school) or cannot be a finalist/semi-finalist for both.

You might try emailing the Morehead Foundation to ask; that way you know for sure rather than someones’ guess or anecdotal response.

I am attaching a link to the Foundation staff. If you scroll over their name it provides an email address. I probably wouldn’t bother Chuck Lovelace with the question but I’ll bet that Matt Proto can answer your question.

I got an email this morning, and Matt Proto says that a student is not allowed to apply for the Robertson at UNC and still be considered for the Morehead. So basically, to be considered for the Morehead, you can only apply for the Robertson at Duke.

Which means that you need to get into Duke before being considered for the Robertson there. For the most part, admission at UNC is easier than at Duke.

teamam-- If you don’t think you have a very good shot at getting into Duke, then I don’t think you have a good shot at getting the Robertson - at either school.

HHS310-- I do not think there is an obvious answer here. It sort of comes down to how strong your preference is for the Morehead. Although people are regularly selected for both the Morehead and the Robertson from the at-large general UNC pool, your chances are much higher if you apply directly (in the case of the Robertson, this happens by filling out the Supplemental Materials Form). If you strongly prefer the Morehead or feel that the program would simply be much better for you, then go with your gut, take your chances and hope UNC admissions nominates you. If you decide, on the other hand, that you’d still be incredibly happy with the Robertson, then I’d apply for that.

That’s a broad generalization and not necessarily correct. OOS admission to UNC is tough and very hard to predict. There have been numerous examples here on CC of people getting into Duke, Columbia and Penn (among others) and being rejected at UNC. My son had two people in his HS graduating class accepted at Duke and rejected at UNC.

The OP is OOS from Maryland so there will be nothing easy about his/her acceptance to UNC.
