hey any current mit students or alum - whats the most common programming language used there or any that would be useful to knw or do u realy just not need to know one

I don't attend mit but am obliged to say the following:

C++/C IS THE BESTEST CODING THINGY EVAR!!!

Also

C#>Java>VB.NET

ALSO... M$ is not EVIL

But MULTIPLE INHERITANCE IS THE FOUNDATIONS OF MECHA-HITLAR!

I don't think you have to know one. Once you pop, the fun don't stop(referring to stack).

M$ is evil. .NET this, intarweb simps!

Ah. LSA, I see you refuse to turn to the dark side. Yet your feelings betray you. If you do not turn to teh dark side, than perhaps your sister will ...

PS: I IS YO DADDY!

Screw M$. I'm just fine with my FreeBSD and Linux, thank-you-very-much. :)

Back to the topic at hand... Scheme is used in the intro courses (similar to LISP). Later on some courses use Java but it's not required. They don't particularly care what language... just as long as it works.

And yes, Microsoft IS satan.

C++, Java, and Perl are the most useful I'd say...

I don't like Perl, but I'm obliged to use it sometimes.

For dynamic applications, I mostly use PHP. I started reading all about Python, the fact that it is an Object Oriented Language fascinate me. OOP-ROCKS

I know much about C (String parsing sucks btw), but haven't really looked at C++.

Oh yeah, .NET sucks.

Yay for Perl and PHP. I've lost some competency in the former but love the latter. Wanted to learn Python but never really had the need yet. I'm a web app guy, so PHP is good enough. (They make me use VB and JS ASP at work ... puke!)

Yeah, Perl is unnessesarly complicated. Again, PHP rocks, but I must say that it still lacks OOP, even with the new additions in PHP 5.

Did you know that Python can be used for Web Apps as well? It is a standard language, and Google is made out of Python.

I don't think all of Google is made out of Python, but some parts certainly are. But a lot of times, if you aren't in charge of the server, you can't use Python because the admin didn't install mod_python (or whatever else), so it's good to know a common alternative.

Yeah. In every case, I run or have admin access to the servers involved, so it's not a big deal. I just haven't gotten around to learning Python - this year has been kinda hectic.

Yeah, but what about speed wise concerns. I still think C++ is the bomb.

Just curious, but why is M$ Satan. All they are doing is practicing good buisness tactics. Have you tried .NET?

Perl is mostly a scripting language (or so it was built to be), I don't think it's overly complicated at all. Rather, it's easier to use in many many circumstances for small jobs.

h88 if you like OO, you should DEFINITELY look into C++.

lol sagar... well said. i use xp though. :p cant throw out my apps and switch to linux like lsa.

Just curious, but ever since I learned programming(in 5th or 4th grade) I sometimes find myself thinking in a programming language... wierd. Does anything of that sort ever happen to you guys?

yes, sagar, I can relate.
