I was considering applying to Georgetown, until i read about a student being sexually assaulted at gunpoint in her dorm. I know that yes, there are things you shouldn't do (like walking on the city streets at 2 am wearing Dolce&Gabbana), but reading about those kind of incidents have made me look at the admissions process rather differently. As i am considering applying to schools in urban, city areas, i was wondering a) are there schools in those areas with great security and b) are there schools that i should def. avoid?

my friends tell me to apply anyway, as they say those kind of incidents could happen anywhere, but i'm still uncertain.

look this is about common sense. yes, some areas of some cities are safer than others, but if you use common sense you should be okay most of the time.

ya the security is good at schools. My cousin goes to usc and i have heard from him and other people there that it is a school that you don't want to walk alone at.

Bad things are going to happen everywhere. Don't dismiss a school because something bad happens there. You could be JFK and have 4 security guards attempting to protect you and still get shot twice.

Hopkins, Penn, Duke, UNC and Wash U are all schools that have had fairly recent crimes committed against students. There are annual reports that are filed by each college that delineate this information. Maybe someone has the link?

i think all schools have some sort of danger spot...it's best to just use common sense and not be places you shouldn't be and you'll probably be fine

This site OPE Campus Security Statistics Search Page
says there were no robberies, zero, at the University of Texas in 2004 or 2005 or 2006.
48,000+ students and no robberies? Not one in three years?
I do not think this site is a reliable source of data.

my friend got robbed at gunpoint at UCBerkeley...
i went to USC for a visit... honestly, the area is a ghetto. but inside, it was really nice, and i actually felt safe. but then again it WAS during the day..

I'm reconsidering Georgetown. I guess i'm just really worried about crime as though i grew up in a metropolitan area, I've never really been exposed to the "bad" parts of neighborhoods...

gprime, that article was really interesting. i would have thought that UChicago and NYU would be more dangerous, as they are in big, metropolitan areas. I guess it's not so much the city where the campuses are located at, rather the NEIGHBORHOOD where it is at??

To set the facts straight, the student who was killed was involved in a fight outside of a frat house and was stabbed...an unfortunate situation but entirely avoidable.

The other student fell from a roof or balcony...no word if this was attributable to foul play.
